My hobby is watching and collecting movies on VHS and DVD. On 17 June 2003, I found the IMDB site through an indication of a friend. My first review was "Anazapta" and since then, when I finish watching a movie, I write my personal opinion about it.
I am eclectic, but my genre number 1 is horror. I see between 800 and 900 movies per year, including TV series ("Sex and the City", "Angel", "Buffy", "Six Feet Under", "Lost" etc.).
My favorite movie is "Casablanca" and it is hard to point out my favorite director, actor and actress. I usually do not read any review before seeing a movie, in order to be not influenced by the critics.
I am trying to list my favorite movies alphabetically ordered, but this list may change:

Satanism and Exploitation
When the teenage orphan Justine (Susana Kamini) arrives in a convent, she befriends Alucarda (Tina Romero), who was raised since she was a baby by the nuns. They become best friends and stay together most of the time. When they meet a gypsy on the forest, he is indeed Satan and possesses the teenagers. Soon the convent is turned upside-down affecting the lives of Alucarda, Justine, the nuns and Father Lázaro (David Silva). The skeptic Dr. Oszek (Claudio Brook) will also witness a showdown between good and evil affecting his beliefs.
"Alucarda, la hija de las tinieblas" is a Mexican horror film with a story of Satanism. The screenplay uses exploitation and hysteria showing the hot Tina Romero and Susana Kamini naked in erotic situations. "Alucarda" is a cult that has aged with a genre typical from James Franco in the 70´s. My vote is five.
Title (Brazil): "Alucarda, a Filha das Trevas" (Alucarda, the Daughter of the Darkness")
Dark Phoenix (2019)
The Dark Phoenix
After a car accident with her parents caused by her powers, the girl Jean Grey is raised by Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) at his school. Years later, the X-Men are assigned to rescue a team of astronauts and Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) is exposed to a dark and evil force. Soon her behavior changes affecting her friends and the future of the world.
"Dark Phoenix" is a reasonable X-Men adventures, with good storyline and special effects. However the screenplay is not so good and this is certainly the weakest film of this franchise. My vote is six.
Title (Brazil): "X-Men: Fênix Negra" ("X-Men: Dark Phoenix")
Combat!: Cry for Help (1966)
The German Doc
During a reconnaissance patrol, Lt. Hanley and his squad has a confrontation with a German machine gun nest and the survival is the German medic Peter Halsman. He is taken prisoner and walks with the American squad. When there is another shootout, he lives a dilemma between his duty and humanity.
"Cry for Help" is a humanistic and antiwar episode of "Combat!" with a dramatic story of conflict of a man. Robert Duvall is perfect in the role of a German medic that has to decide his mission in the war. My vote is eight.
Title (Brazil): "Pedido de Ajuda" ("Cry for Help")
Stargate SG-1: Babylon (2005)
The Warriors of Sodan
While exploring a planet of rebel Jaffa known as The Warriors of Sodan, Colonel Mitchell is captured by the Jaffa. He is accused for the death of a warrior that indeed is recovering at the SGC. Now Mitchell has to fight for his life in a showdown against the warrior´s brother.
"Babylon" is an episode of "Stargate SG-1" independent from Ba'al storyline. The episode has a good surprise in the end with the fate of Colonel Mitchell. My vote is seven.
Title (Brazil): "Babylon"
Stargate SG-1: Ex Deus Machina (2005)
When a Jaffa is found dead, the SG-1 investigates and discovers that Ba'al is alive and hidden on Earth. Their further investigation shows that Gerak is trying to secretly capture Ba'al to show force to the Jaffa council. When the SG-1 is contacted by Ba'al, they learn that he has a Naquadah bomb hidden in Seattle and he will blow-up if the SG-1 continues to track him.
"Ex Deus Machina" shows the return of Ba'al, powerful and hidden on Earth. The episode is full of action and the conclusion is a great surprise with the fate of Ba'al. My vote is seven.
Title (Brazil): "Ex Deus Machina"
Stargate SG-1: Beachhead (2005)
One prior takes a Jaffa occupied planet and the inhabitants disappear. Then he builds a growing force field near the stargate. The SG-1 is assigned to investigate and travels using Prometheus. They meet Gerak and his Jaffa trying to destroy the prior and creating a bigger problem. Meanwhile the notorious Goa'uld Nerus offers his support to the Tauri to defeat the prior and destroy the force field.
"Beachhead" is a good episode of "Stargate SG-1". Vala makes the day with her disregarded solution. The glutton Nerus is a despicable villain but the conclusion with his frustrated reaction is funny. My vote is eight.
Title (Brazil): "Beachhead"
The Mask of Dimitrios (1944)
Intriguing and Full of Action Mystery
When the body of the notorious Dimitrios Makropoulos is found stabbed and drowned at the sea coast of Istanbul, Colonel Haki (Kurt Katch) meets the Dutch writer Cornelius Leyden (Peter Lorre) at a party and tells the story of the criminal to the writer. Leyden decides to investigate the intriguing story to write a novel and stumbles upon the mysterious Mr. Peters (Sydney Greenstreet) while he learns the fascinating story of Dimitrios Makropoulos (Zachary Scott).
"The Mask of Dimitrios" is a film-noir with crime, drama and adventure of a notorious but fascinating criminal. The plot has many twists and the conclusion is satisfactory. My vote is seven.
Title (Brazil): "A Máscara de Dimitrios" ("The Mask of Dimitrios")
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
Zombies by Jim Jarmusch
In Centerville, the undead rise when there is a shift in the axis of rotation of Earth. "The Dead Don't Die" is the slow development of this storyline following several dwellers of this town. Films by Jim Jarmusch are usually cult and slow paced. His navigation through the zombie genre is an uneven film, with at least a good surprise like the flying saucer scene and many boring and unfunny moments. The cast composed by many veteran actors and actresses is a plus but the final result is neither cult nor worthwhile spending 1h 44 min watching. My vote is five.
Title (Brazil): "Os Mortos Não Morrem" ("The Dead Don't Die")
Combat!: The Furlough (1966)
The Sad Reality of the War
During a reconnaissance patrol, Sgt. Saunders loses two men shot by a German sniper. Private Harold Vincent asks Saunders to deliver US$ 300 to his friend, the orphanage director Ann Tinsley, during his near furlough. Saunders travels to the suburb of London and meets Ann. There are successive bombing and they have to move to the shelter with the children. Saunders gets involved with Ann and the children and decides to spend his leave helping Ann to rebuild the orphanage. But life is not easy in times of war.
"The Furlough" is a different episode of "Combat!", showing the sad reality of the war to the civilians in London. It is another touching and heartbreaking episode of "Combat!" with a dramatic and tragic conclusion. My vote is nine.
Title (Brazil): "A Folga" ("The Furlough")
Combat!: The Brothers (1966)
Touching and Dramatic Episode
Lt. Hanley and his squad encounter the young Frenchman Maquis Marcel Paulon that will guide them to meet his older brother Leon Paulon, who is the brave leader of the resistance. Marcel will show the weak parts of the German forces to Hanley. Soon Hanley and his men realize that Marcel is a coward man frightened with the war. When they meet Leon, he insists to bring Marcel with their reconnaissance patrol with tragic consequences.
"The Brothers" is one of the most touching and dramatic episodes of "Combat!" with the story of two brothers, one a brave man and the other a coward. The conclusion is very sad and heartbreaking. My vote is nine.
Title (Brazil): "Os Irmãos" ("The Brothers")
Combat!: A Child's Game (1966)
Non Engaging Episode
Sgt. Saunders and his squad are assigned to take a farmhouse to be used as outpost. When they arrive, they find the spot protected by a squad of teenage German soldiers. Saunders decides to convince the youngsters to surrender but it is not an easy task.
"A Child's Game" is a non engaging episode of "Combat!". The story is corny, with Saunders and his men wasting time and ammunition. Despite their ages, the German soldiers are armed and dangerous and the attitude of the American soldiers has no explanation. My vote is seven.
Title (Brazil): "Brincadeira de Criança" ("Child's Game")
Original Film Noir
The lonely dock worker Bobo (Jean Gabin) is a strong man that likes to drink a lot. One night, after a binge, he awakes without recollections at a barge hired to sell bait. He befriends the night watchman Nutsy (Claude Rains); rescues the suicidal Anna (Ida Lupino) from the sea and brings her to the barge to recover. Meanwhile he learns that his acquaintance Pop Kelly (Arthur Aylesworth) was found murdered strangled. Bobo and Anna fall in love with each other and decide to get married. But Bobo´s former friend Tiny (Thomas Mitchell) has always lived supported by Bobo and intends to get rid of Anna.
"Moontide" is an original film noir with a different storyline, great cast and director. Jean Gabin, Ida Lupino, Claude Rains and the uncredited Fritz Lang together are feast for any movie lover. The gloomy story and atmosphere have a melancholic happy ending and is worthwhile watching. My vote is seven.
Title (Brazil): "Brumas" ("Sea Mist")
Elton John is one of the greatest contemporary artists of the world, no doubt. However, this highlight of his life is a terrible overrated film, without any emotion and an exploitation of Elton John as a needy alcoholic and drug addicted gay. He is needy because of his one-dimension parents that are never developed and the viewer never knows why they treat the boy that way. His gay side is also poorly developed and more exploited. In the end, the film is lost between a shallow drama and a boring musical. The performance of Taron Egerton in the role of Elton John is the best this movie can offer. My vote is six.
Title (Brazil): "Rocketman"
Gives the Sensation of Watching a Boring Videogame
The overrated "John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum" is an action film that gives the sensation of watching a boring videogame. The plot is only John Wick running and killing the assassins that want the 14 million dollar award for his head. After the initial original deaths, the film becomes tiresome, boring and repetitive. My vote is three.
Title (Brazil): "John Wick 3: Parabellum" ("John Wick 3: Parabellum")
Stress and Friction
After three days without sleeping, Saunders and his squad are tired and stressed, with friction between Littlejohn and Caje. They return to the outpost to rest, but Lt. Hanley assigns another mission to the group. The conflict between Littlejohn and Caje increases and Saunders loses his confidence in them. But soon they stumble upon a German machine gun nest and Saunders is wounded and trapped. What will happen next?
"Conflict" is a great episode of "Combat!", with the usually calm Littlejohn and Caje having friction. Kirby is not part of this episode; otherwise the conflict would certainly be greater. The episode is well-resolved between fellow palls. My vote is eight.
Title (Brazil): "Conflito" ("Conflict")
Men in Black: International (2019)
Entertaining and Funny
The franchise "Men in Black: International" is an entertaining and funny adventure. MIB films with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are certainly superior but this new movie is worthwhile watching. Chris Hemsworth performing Agent H and Tessa Thompson in the role of the rookie Agent M show good chemistry and are responsible for some hilarious moments while Emma Thompson and Liam Neeson give the necessary credibility to the agency. My vote is six.
Title (Brazil): "MIB: Homens de Preto - Internacional" ("MIB: Men in Black: International")
The Curse of La Llorona (2019)
Unoriginal Collection of Clichés
"The Curse of La Llorona" is a horror film with beautiful cinematography and atmosphere. The cast is not bad and the effects are also good. Unfortunately, the story is absolutely unoriginal, indeed a great collection of clichés. The film gives the sensation of Deja vu and the viewer feels that he or she has already seen it all before, frustrating those with expectation of watching a creepy horror movie. My vote is five.
Title (Brazil): "A Maldição da Chorona" ("The Curse of the Weeping Woman")
Murder Is My Beat (1955)
When a man is found with his face destroyed by fire in a fireplace, the prominent Police Detective Ray Patrick (Paul Langton) is assigned to the case. Soon he captures the singer Eden Lane (Barbara Payton), who was the man´s mistress, and solves the case. Eden is sentenced to prison and while Ray is transporting her by train, she claims that she has just seen her lover alive in a train station. Ray believes the woman and helps her to escape to hunt the man. Meanwhile Police Captain Bert Rawley (Robert Shayne) hunts the couple down.
"Murder Is My Beat" is a flawed but entertaining film-noir directed by Edgar G. Ulmer. The plot has many coincidences and most of the twists are not believable but it is worthwhile watching at least once. My vote is seven.
Title (Brazil): "O Morto Desaparecido" (The Vanished Dead")
The Man Who Cheated Himself (1950)
Andy Cullen (John Dall), the rookie detective and brother of the homicide Lt. Ed Cullen (Lee J. Cobb), is assigned to work with him. Andy will marry his beloved Janet (Lisa Howard) on the next days and Ed will be his best man. Ed is a wolf and is having a secret love affair with the wealthy Lois Frazer (Jane Wyatt), who is divorcing her husband Howard Frazer (Harlan Warde). Lois finds that Howard has bought a gun and suspects he intends to kill her; so she calls Ed to help her. When they are together, Howard arrives and Lois accidentally kills her husband. Ed decides to help her and forges a crime scene near the airport. Soon he is assigned to investigate the case with Andy but his young brother wants to show that he is a good detective.
"The Man Who Cheated Himself" is a film noir with a story of brothers with opposite intentions. The veteran detective wants to cover the felony he committed to protect his lover while his brother wants to prove that he is a good detective. The conflict between brothers is interesting and the open conclusion is a plus. My vote is seven.
Title (Brazil): "Por uma Mulher Má" ("For a Wicked Woman")
Bleak and Pessimist
Sometimes we watch a film that does not end the way we want (or expect). "Brightburn" is one of those films. The story begins almost as a rip-off "Smallville", with a boy from another planet raised by farmers in Brightburn, Kansas. However when adolescence comes, the powerful boy turns into an evil creature instead of a conventional hero. And from this moment on, he becomes a cruel being incapable to be destroyed and the film has a bleak, pessimist and unpleasant conclusion. Is "Brightburn" a bad movie? No, but probably will not please many viewers. My vote is seven.
Title (Brazil): "Brightburn - Filho das Trevas" ("Brightburn - Son of the Shadows")
Daughter of the Wolf (2019)
Deserved a Better Screenplay
"Daughter of the Wolf" is a film that deserved a better screenplay. The landscape and scenery are magnificent and the viewer sees the film expecting a better resolution of the story of a skilled military woman that has her teenage son abducted by criminals. Unfortunately the screenplay is very weak and confused, with poor character and situation development. Anyway it is not as bad as many reviews indicate and may be watched with low expectations. My vote is six.

Combat!: The Letter (1966)
The Younger Brother´s Letter
After a confrontation with a German squad in the front with casualties, Saunders and his squad return to rest in the outpost. They receive their correspondences and Saunders receives a letter from his younger brother disclosing that he has enlisted in the army to fight. Immediately after, Saunders receives two replacements and one of them looks like his brother. Saunders projects the image of his brother in the rookie soldier and tries to protect him like an older brother.
"The Letter" is among the best episode of "Combat!", with great actions scenes and very dramatic situation. The participation of supporting cast like Kirby and Doc is intense and the G.I. Jim Hummel is an interesting character. The conclusion is also excellent. My vote is nine.
Title (Brazil): "A Carta" ("The Letter")
Critters Attack! (2019)
"Critters Attack!" is a funny trash that recalls the campy Troma´s films. The cult Dee Wallace also participates in the role of Dee, giving a possible status of cult to this lame production. The bad acting, awful story and funny evil creatures together make a love or hate film. I liked it! My vote is six.
Title (Brazil): Not Available
Black Mirror: Striking Vipers (2019)
Former college friends and videogame fight fans Danny (Anthony Mackie) and Karl (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) reunite many years after in Danny´s birthday at his place. Danny is married with a child with Theo (Nikki Beharie) and Karl gives a state-of-art update of the former fight game to his friend. During the night, they select the former characters Roxette (Pom Klementieff) and Lance (Ludi Lin) and out of the blue they have a romance instead of a fight affecting their private lives and malehood.
"Striking Vipers" is one of the weirdest "Black Mirror" episodes, with an erotic tale about the virtual world affecting the real world of the two lead characters in their addiction. There are funny situations but something is missing in the intriguing story. My vote is seven.
Title (Brazil): "Striking Vipers"
Combat!: The Chapel at Able-Five (1966)
The Good Man Dilemma
While returning to his lines with important information, Saunders´s mate steps on a land mine and dies. Saunders is blinded with the explosion alone in a mine field. Out of the blue, a German Major rescues him posing of English officer with the intention of helping him to bring a wounded German Captain back to his lines. Soon Saunders learns that the officer is a chaplain. Meanwhile Hanley and a squad look for Saunders.
"The Chapel at Able-Five" is an episode with a moral dilemma of a good man. The German chaplain is pressed by his fellow mate to kill Saunders since he has an information that may compromise a German attack. But as a man of God, he wishes to save both enemies. The conclusion is predictable. My vote is seven.
Title (Brazil): "A Capela em Able-5" ("The Chapel at Able-Five")
