Giant Monster! Killer Parasites! GREAT Movie!
First off, I'm not a big monster movie fan.
Second, I wasn't a fan of this movie until a little while ago. I was following the boards for a long time, so it got me intrigued. Then, one of my best friends, Quel, who was afraid to watch TDK cuz she thought it'd be "too scary," revealed that she thought that Cloverfield was "the best movie EVER." I HAD to see this movie.
So, last night, me, Quel, and Neels all got together and watched it. Despite the fact that I'd read EVERYTHING about the movie prior to watching it, I was still on the edge of my seat the entire time. (Oh, and I saw the splash. Made Quel rewind it and play it frame-by-frame.) Several parts (Marlena's bite, torso-less soldier, Marlena explodes, getting Beth un-impaled) were a tad too gory for me, but overall, awesome movie. (Let me say, you haven't had a weird movie experience until you see it with me, Neels, and Quel. They're talking about how cute Rob was, I'm pitying the monster and saying that it's cute. It WAS.)
I know that one of the biggest complaints about this movie was the shaky, first-person view. Didn't bug me. It pulled off some INSANELY awesome shots, and I suffered with the characters the whole way..
I'm fully on board for a sequel.
Invader ZIM (2001)
I'm sorry, Zim. I will always love you...
I'm a new fan, but I've already watched each episode at least six times, maybe more.
I started watching Zim when it was on Nicktoons from 6-7 AM. I got up to watch another cartoon, and Nicktoons was the only other channel that was showing cartoons. I'd watch Zim during the commercials, and then watch the 6:30-7 episode when my other show was over. My first run-in with Zim was "GIR Goes Crazy and Stuff". All I saw of it was the squid-man waking up, GIR and Zim fighting, and the line that sold me on Invader Zim forever..."CURSE YOU SNACKS!!! CURSE YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUU!!!" (Those of you who read my message board things know that that line's my signature.) After I'd caught up on my other show, I started watching Zim for the full hour. Unfortunately, just as I was starting to get into it, Nicktoons canceled Zim for that time slot.
I barely saw Zim when he was first on TV (and I'm very sad about that) but I DID catch about the last ten minutes of "Tak:The Hideous New Girl", and I was absolutely blown away by the incredible CG and the funny lines. GIR was cute, and Zim was ADORABLE! I was home alone, and it was REALLY dark out, and watching Zim with that atmosphere made it the MOST INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE OF MY 7-YEAR-OLD LIFE!!! Unfortunately, when I went back for more Zim the next time I was home alone, he was gone, I thought, forever.
After Zim (on Nicktoons) was bumped to FOUR IN THE FRICKING MORNING, I began watching Zim on the internet. Then I recently bought the Complete Invasion set, and I've shown some of them to my brother, and he has become the King of the GIR Fans. He and I quote lines whenever we can. My MOM, however, is a completely different story. She REALLY doesn't like it. I SHOWED HER "ZIM EATS WAFFLES" AND SHE DIDN'T LAUGH! NOT ONCE! But still, she's a mom.
I'm still mourning the loss of Zim, King of Old Nickelodeon. With the incredible voice acting, animation, and CG, it left many people, including me, wondering HOW this Supreme God of Cartoon Characters could have been canceled. But that's all I've got to say on that. I'm off to look for Bloody GIR.
High School Musical 2 (2007)
I didn't even WATCH this
and it was insanely irritating!!! It was my aunt & uncle's 40th birthday last summer, and they rented a huge (literally, it had an elevator) beach house, which, unfortunately (kinda), had a home theater downstairs. My cousins are huge HSM fans, crap, even their MOM is! So they all went downstairs to watch it.
Unfortunately, the only computer in the house was downstairs by the movie room. I checked my email, then went onto YouTube. I was happily watching How It Should Have Ended, when ALL the females (and the majority of the males) in my family trooped down the stairs and into the movie room, and (THANK YOU GOD) closed the door. I thought I would have about two more hours to watch funny videos.
How wrong I was.
I COULD HEAR IT THROUGH THE WALLS. They were playing it that loud. I could hear EVERY line, song, and splash. I couldn't even see what was going on, but I knew what was happening.
The song that bugs me the most is the opening one..."What Time Is It" or "Summertime" or whatever the heck the name of that first song is. The fact that it starts out, they're all sitting at their desks chanting "Summer...summer...summer" like some freakish cult made me think that they'd run right out of the building, not sing and dance like an even FREAKIER cult. Or just hang out, sign a few yearbooks, and run from the school like bats outta 7734 (check it on a calculator). But no, they throw papers in the air and bust into a dance number. I have been forced to watch the music video (curse my sister), and the culminating chest slide by Zac Efron is an insult to penguins and seals and performing dolphins everywhere.
The song "Fabulous" with Ashley Tisdale was just ridiculous. What I don't get is "I Don't Dance". Total visual/audio oxymoron. They're singing and dancing, singing "yadda yadda yadda...I DON'T DANCE!!! yadda yadda" *bust out dancing* "I DON'T DANCE!!!" Just like in HSM1, (the basketball dance number when you already know they hate the idea of singing & dancing), they are singing about and doing something that they claim they wouldn't do. (Sorry if that was confusing, reread it a few times.) Just trash. Complete and utter trash. Even if you can't see it.
greatest Disney movie made off a book in a LONG time! *possible spoilers*
OK, first off, I have been a HUGE fan of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe since I had to read it for summer reading in fourth grade. It's the ONLY summer reading book I've ever read that I reread about 3 (or more) times a year.
When I saw the original ads, (You know, the ones with just the name and the snow-covered mountains in the background?) I was actually looking forward to seeing it. Unlike other movies (those of you who've read my other posts, you know that I usually hate the previews, love the movie) I actually wanted to see this. Then mom told me "I saw an actual preview for this, it looks really scary", but heck, I'd been reading and rereading this book since fourth grade so there was NO WAY I was gonna miss this thing.
The story of the four brave Pevensie children that get teleported to another world inside a wardrobe where a war is taking place at the same time as WWII, befriend chatty beavers, fauns, centaurs, talking animals, and meet the heroic lion Aslan (Liam Neeson), then fight in a battle against Jadis, the White Witch (Tilda Swinton) that changes their lives forever...I enjoyed every single minute of this, both reading AND watching the movie.
I have to say, for me, the best part of the movie was the battle. It was incredible, the CGI was amazing, and the score by Harry Gregson-Williams was fantastic, almost John Williams-esquire! My friends and I were practically sobbing (Seriously, I NEVER do that unless I have an inexplicable love for the character) at Aslan's death scene.
High School Musical (2006)
oh for the love of...
OK, where do I start? I had a lot of issues with this movie. The acting, the singing, the clichés, and the sets.
The acting: Terrible acting and poorly casted. Zac Effron, if I see his face on one more thing and "Hottie" written underneath it, I swear, I WILL BARF. He cannot sing or act, plain and simple. And his face while he sings...was someone standing near him with a baseball bat and whacking him repeatedly in the groin? Because that was the impression I got. Does anyone else think he looks like he's having a railroad spike shoved through his leg? Vanessa Hudgens...SUCKS. She can't sing, can't act...my lord, what brain-dead moron cast her? The drama teacher = flat-out obnoxious. I'm a drama geek, and I do not act like any of the people. Nor do any of my friends. Also, there is NOT that much competition for roles, trust a drama geek on that. And Ashley Tisdale...my God, don't get me started on her. She sucks, let's just leave it at that, OK?
The singing: Bad doesn't even BEGIN to describe it. I don't think there's an adjective for it yet. Ashley Tisdale tries waaaay to hard to make her voice sound sweet. You can tell when Zac Effron's not singing. Vanessa Hudgens was just all-out bad. Also, why would the basketball team sing & dance like that when you already know their hatred of the drama/music students and teachers?!?!
The sets: WHAT HIGH SCHOOL HAS A CAFETERIA LIKE THAT?!?! And what high school would let ONE student out of about a THOUSAND paint her locker pink and put a frigging star on it??? The cafeteria looked like something off a ship!!!
The clichés: They get the lead roles in the frigging musical. They win the state championship. They win the scholastic thingy. The girl comes back to the guy in twenty minutes. No one's luck is THAT good. Also, why would the scholastic championship people let a student boot up a laptop computer IN THE MIDDLE OF A CHALLENGE?!?! And don't say the people couldn't possibly have seen it; you could see it all right.
Everyone, don't let people tell you this is a good movie. Stay away. FAR away.
SpongeBob SquarePants (1999)
I'd like to thank SpongeBob for making me the female I am today...
A complete psychopath!!! I wasn't allowed to watch this show until I was about 10, but my first run-in with this show was "Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost", at the end where Squidward goes "SpongeBob, I have a confession to make." "*GASP* You're BALD?!?!". My little brother and sister and I were laughing our heads off, then mom came downstairs and we had to switch the channel before she saw what we were watching.
A few years later I made a new friend who was obsessed with the "little square dude" (she is now neither my friend nor a SpongeBob fan, unfortunately) and I went over to her house. We planted ourselves in front of the TV to eat our cookies and she turned on SpongeBob. Up until that point, I hadn't watched it since that run-in at age 7, and my mom had forbidden us from watching it (under the impression it was *fingerquotes* an inappropriate show *fingerquotes*). But the theme song came on and I passed out laughing from the visual of SpongeBob playing his nose at the end of the song. Needless to say, it happened several more times thru out that day. By the time my mom came to pick me up, my friend and I were singing the theme song at the top of our lungs. I turned it on when we got home and showed it to my mom, and she liked it too. We became a family of die-hard fanboys.
Fast-forward five years. My 10-year-old brother and I still love it. My 12-year-old sister hates it, but giggles occasionally at the funny parts. Mom laughs out loud at various points. My dad rarely watches it. I am 15 and I have fallen even more in love with it than I had that day five year ago.
I am literally in love with Patrick. I want to give him a huge hug and marry him. He is easily the cutest guy in the show, and Bill Fagerbakke does an awesome job as the big pink dummy. Tom Kenny is amazing as the kid-at-heart sponge. All the other voices are incredible, and they suit the characters. They haven't changed the voices at all, so that's a very good sign.
Some of my fellow commenters say that SpongeBob is gay and this show promotes homosexuality. Also, some others say that SpongeBob bears no resemblance at all to an actual sea sponge. I have one thing to say to you. *AHEM.*:
YOU PEOPLE HAVE NO IMAGINATION WHATSOEVER SPONGEBOB AND PATRICK ARE *NOT* GAY THEY ARE THE BEST OF FRIENDS I HUG *MY* FRIENDS DOES THAT MAKE *ME* GAY GO WATCH DORA THE EXPLORER IF YOU THINK EVERY CARTOON CHARACTER ON THE PLANET IS GAY SPONGEBOB IS A DISH SPONGE CUZ SEA SPONGES ARE SEDENTARY AND THEY SIT THERE AND FILTER FEED LIKE SPONGEBOB TRIED TO DO ONE EPISODE AND A TV SHOW BASED AROUND THAT WOULD SUCK GREATLY. *Whew.*
The lines are very funny; Patrick's being my favorite..."Is mayonnaise an instrument?" "I've been replaced by a SANDWICH!!!" "It may be stupid, but it's also dumb!" "Don't genius live in lamps?" "Does this mean we're not getting pizza?"
SpongeBob made me an incredibly funny person...at least my friends say so. I love this show and I hope it never ever goes off the air.
Ben 10 (2005)
Don't listen to the people who hate it
My little brother and I have watched it from, like, the 1st episode onward. I'm 15, a girl, and in high school, and I LOVE THIS SHOW!!! The humans, while their drawing is a bit flawed, are very good. I was a little skeptic about the "two kids, a old dude, and a magic watch" deal, but my brother wouldn't let me have the clicker and I didn't want to go downstairs to watch SpongeBob (our basement's COLD, man), so i sat on my butt and watched. WOW were my original skepticisms misplaced!
The alien designs are incredible (Wild Mutt, Heatblast, and Upgrade to name a few). The evil aliens are pretty awesome too...Vilgax (or however you spell it can) survive jut about ANYTHING!!!
Some of my fellow commenters on this show have pointed out the unlikelyhood of an evil alien/human/wizard being in every single place they go. Weeell, I noticed that myself, and I have a few theories on that topic: 1)The bad guys/aliens are following them. 2)The bad guys/aliens are following the Omnitrix's signal (maybe it leaves some kind of radiation footprint whenever Ben uses it that makes it trackable, I dunno!). 3)The grandfather fights evil paranormals, so maybe HE'S tracking the bad guys, not the other way around. 4)Weird things happen everyday around the world, maybe it's just chance! I've seen a UFO, buildings are haunted, Nessie's been sighted (if they do an episode at Loch Ness, THAT I'd like to see. Or maybe Lake Champlain.). And 5)THEY HAVE TO HAVE A BAD GUY THERE OR NOTHING WOULD HAPPEN, THE SHOW WOULD GET CANCELLED, AND THEY'D REPLACE IT WITH DORA THE EXPLORER!
Bottom Line: Give this show a chance. The voices suit the characters (Tara Strong, you ROCK). The aliens are cool. The villains are freaky. There are some awesome gadgets. Grandpa, Gwen and Ben make a kick-ass team. Just sit and watch one full episode; you might be surprised.
Mrs Rowling, would you mind directing?
If JK Rowling were directing these movies, we'd wind up with a five-hour movie but PEOPLE WOULD SIT THERE AND WATCH IT. Why? BECAUSE IT'S HARRY POTTER. Stick in an intermission, make it really long, it's HP, people will stay and watch it!!!
The SFX & CG were really good (always have been), Alan Rickman & various other actors did an awesome job (only reason for the 3 stars), but WHAT THE HELL happened to the kind, old, intelligent, powerful, slightly crazy Dumbledore?!?! Why does he start yelling & choking Harry & using him as BAIT?!?!
Also, do dragons have memory loss??? The damn thing forgets to fly and starts CLIMBING THE BUILDING!!! What was up with that chase scene?!?! Couldn't they have kept it even REMOTELY like the book?!?!
Why stick Crouch jr in there at the beginning?!?! Why get rid of Dobby??? He's like my favorite character!!! And the other house-elf...uhh...what's her name..Winky? Why write them out? And S.P.E.W....and the kitchens??? And Hogsmeade and Sirius? Was that EVEN Sirius in the fireplace scene? I couldn't tell. WHY?!?! AAAGH!!!
The graveyard scene...words can't describe how bad that was. Priori Incantatem...for want of a better word...SUCKED. That wasn't how I imagined it. Where was the terror of the Death Eaters?!?! Voldemort's anger?!?! HALF OF THE DAMN DEATH EATERS WERE GONE!!!
WHAT...THE HELL...WAS UP...WITH...THE MAZE?!?! Holy crap! The hedges had a mind of their own and cannibalistic roots!!! What about the traps, the sphinx, the Acromantulas?!?! WE'VE SEEN THE ACROMANTULAS, THEY WERE AWESOME, WE KNOW THEY EXIST (thank you, Chris Columbus), THE BOOK GOES INTO GREAT DETAIL ABOUT AN ATTACK BY ONE OF THEM, *SO WHY NOT PUT THEM IN*?!?!
Also, as in all my HP reviews, praise of John Williams' fantastic score. BUT WAIT!!! HE DIDN'T DO THIS ONE!!! I miss him already. Can you imagine what kind of creepy, haunting tone he would have come up with for the lake scene??? THe spooky stuff he could have made for the maze??? The eerie graveyard theme??? He could have written some incredible Piori Incantatem music!
John Williams, COME BAAAAAAACK!!!
Seriously, JK Rowling, would you mind directing these movies?
PS: Sorry about all the yelling in caps. When I feel angry about one of my favorite books turning to trash, I tend to use caps.
Best of the Series!!!
OK, the majority of these movies aren't too good (Order of the Pheonix & Goblet of Fire being the worst). But this one really outstrips the others. They included the majority of the things in the book (but not the DeathDay Party or the Hand of Glory - but the thing that grabbed Harry's hand was good enough for me).
The Basilisk & Dobby looked (and sounded) just like I thought they would. The flying car sequence was excellent...although Harry falling out the door and dangling over the train was a bit much for me. The Acromantula attack was incredible, and fighting the Basilisk was INSANELY cool! Unfortunately, I'm a villain fan, and I was very sad when the Basilisk was killed. Riddle's death was well-done too.
Overall, the thing that sold this for me was, once again, John Williams' fantastic score...buy "Fawkes the Pheonix" off iTunes, it's excellent! I truly miss John Williams' work in these movies.
Don't pay ANY ATTENTION AT ALL to those dunderheads who say this movie sucked. It didn't. At all.
the most incredible summer movie EVER
I first saw the title listed under Shia LaBeouf's name on this site about a year ago. All I knew about the Transformers was that they had thoroughly awesome team symbols and they turned into vehicles and that I was very inept at switching back and forth between the vehicle and the robot in the toys (I broke them and I still do.). That was about it. I only knew those because my brother got one or two about every Christmas. So I saw this movie under Shia Labeouf's movie listings in "Pre-Production", and thought "Oh man...I sense a bad one. It's probably gonna be animated." Then I forgot all about it.
A few months later, sitting in a movie theater (I think it was POTC 3...I can't remember, the preview was better than the movie if I forgot about it already.). Anyhoo, I think it was the scene with Scorponok and seeing Optimus that really sold me with "OK...this looks cool!" It also looked like there would be plenty of car chases & explosions, and there didn't look like there would be much kissing (which I was INSANELY happy about...I HATE long kiss scenes & sappy stuff...I admit I'm a girl, but action has more in it for me.)
I took my 7-year-old cousin to see it with me, and I never sit up front or in the median between the front and back sections (far-sighted) but i made an exception cuz this movie was so damn awesome. It was the MOST INCREDIBLE MOVIE EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE!!! Scorponok is THE EXTREME BADASS ROBOT!!!
My siblings watched the Kid's Choice Awards on Nickelodeon last night, and I believe that the children and/or teens of America are idiots. Transformers lost to Alvin & the Chipmunks...HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?!?!
I'd give this movie WAAAAAY more than a 10, more like a 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 because this was perfectly cast, incredibly acted, and the SFX were INCREDIBLE! Go see this movie!!! NOW!!!
David Yates, you have the right to remain silent.
OK, WHO ASKED THIS GUY TO DIRECT?!?! What IDIOT wrote this thing?!?! I always liked the Harry Potter movies, but THIS...I didn't get a thing that was going on, and I READ THE BOOKS!!! Nothing flowed, it was like the guy in the projection room was fast-forwarding the film at random intervals ("Hey let's have fun with the audience!") The only reason I gave this a 3 was because Umbridge and Luna were FANTASTIC!!!
How are they going to do the last movie if they cut out HALF THE THINGS IN THE PLOT??? The mirror, the necklace, DOBBY?!?! Where was the mourning for Sirius, the angry outbursts, THE QUIDDITCH?!?! And WHAT THE HECK was up with the black & white trails behind the Order people and the Death Eaters??? What happened to the big awesome bad ass fight between Voldemort & Dumbledore?!?!
My mom hates sitting next to me in Harry Potter movies, cuz I talk thru the entire thing...("They didn't do that!!! Why didn't they put that in??? I loved that part, they ruined it!!!") Throughout this movie I wanted to scream.
What was up with the Episode 5 spoofing in the pre-Dumbledore fight??? "Release your anger, strike me down"?!?! WHAT THE HECK?!?! Mentally, I was going, "YO! VOLDEMORT! Just take the lightsaber out, force Harry onto a narrow plank of wood above a deep hole, slice his hand off, and announce that you ARE his father!!!"
Bring back Chris Columbus!!! He did a WAAAAAAAY better job!
One last thing: BRING BACK JOHN WILLIAMS!!! He is one of the BEST score writers EVER! All that is on my iPod is his music from Star Wars and various other things! He wrote some incredible music (buy "Buckbeak's Flight" from the Prisoner of Azkaban soundtrack, it's one of the MOST BEAUTIFUL pieces of music I have ever heard) and it brought the scenes to life. The music from Goblet of Fire and this movie was simply an underscore to the action. BRING JOHN WILLIAMS BACK!!!
Who's with me on this???
Order of the Pheonix used to be my favorite book of the series. Thanks a lot, David Yates.
PS: Who else thinks that kiss went on way too long, and that Ron, Hermione, Malfoy, and Snape needed more lines???
