Basic (2003)
Not going to grip you
23 January 2020
A bit silly and overblown, but it has occasional moments of good value entertainment. Travolta does his 'The General's Daughter' schtick again, but 'Basic' entirely lacks that film's class. At just over 90 minutes, it's too short to bore you, but it isn't going to grip you, either.

Young Adult (2011)
Waste of time
23 January 2020
There's very little entertainment to be had here. The main character is unlikeable and impossible to root for, and her deluded quest is very low stakes, so there's no involvement as a viewer. On the whole, a waste of everybody's time.

Erased (2012)
Really quite silly
21 January 2020
Bizarrely incomprehensible character motivation and really weak action sequences make this a terrible misfire of a spy flick. Almost entirely unengaging and difficult to sit through. Probably not worth your time.

Brooklyn (2015)
Touching little drama
21 January 2020
It's a bit too straightforward for my tastes, with little in the way of intrigue or unexpected story turns. However, for what it is, it's quite beautifully realised. Easy to watch, but won't set the world on fire.

Moving courtroom drama

Warning: Spoilers
Comparisons with 'Erin Brockovich' are inevitable, and this film has less of an impact than that film. Nevertheless, Travolta's performance draws you in and effectively has you rooting for the underdogs. The big difference here is that the suit is lost in all but name because of the paltry payout, so there's none of the triumph to be enjoyed in 'Erin Brockovich'. Despite that, this is definitely worth a watch.

Doesn't work
6 January 2020
Lacking any suspense or involvement, this overblown mess doesn't work. With Bridges's professor spouting largely irrelevant lectures which make his class seem dull and pointless, and Robbins sleepwalking through a seriously underwritten role, there's little entertainment to be had. Avoid.

Not enough detail
6 January 2020
Let me begin by saying that I'm not a fan of The Beach Boys. I watched this merely because I'm interested in the songwriting and recording process. Sadly, for someone like me there's precious little of the detail that I sought, so it's a mediocre effort from my point of view. If you're a fan of the music, then you can easily add another star or two to my rating.

Good, but not great
28 December 2019
A gentle smirk-fest for the most part, but there's some great laugh-out-loud material towards the end. Overall, good but not great.

Hard Candy (2005)
Very difficult to like
27 December 2019
This is a very difficult film to like. It deals with tricky issues, features some committed performances, but ends up adding up to less than the sum of its parts. Overall, not worth sitting through.

Critical metacommentary
10 November 2019
While you do have to wait for the truly tense and effective horror stuff, I really enjoyed the travelogue design of the film and how we were shown some of the key tourist hotspots of LA and the West Coast. Some fantastic locations are featured, and the film has a really improvised, spontaneous feel which gives it a great sense of immediacy - perfect for a critical metacommentary of vlogging. Much to admire.

The Edict (2017)
Genre fans will enjoy it
25 October 2019
A dark and suspenseful horror with a sense of dread and foreboding throughout. It has a very clever opening sequence that really pulls you in, with some great visuals and sound design. Lots for genre fans to enjoy.

A perplexing oddity
25 October 2019
Another desperately unfunny comedy in which tediously little happens and there are not even any bad jokes - just no jokes at all. It's beyond comprehension how anyone could like this film. Today, it serves merely as an interesting historical document of how they don't make films like this anymore - thank goodness! Definitely not worth watching.

Apollo 13 (I) (1995)
Compelling drama
21 October 2019
At nearly 25 years old, this film is still very watchable today. The launch CGI sequence looks pretty ropey by modern standards, but the dramatic tension and acting are still top notch. There's a large slice of American cornball every now and then, but on the whole it is a compelling drama and still very much worth a look.

Surprisingly entertaining

Not remotely a comedy, but surprisingly entertaining. With well drawn characters, effective acting and a fun storyline this film works well. Worth a look.

The Scam (I) (2012)
Average
12 October 2019
It has a distinctly rough and ready, homemade feel, but the script is competent and some of the acting is actually pretty impressive, despite the shoddy camerawork and variable sound quality. However, it's certainly watchable in a kind of middle of the road way. Completely average in all respects.

Fascinating viewing
11 October 2019
Even a casual VOD viewer must have noticed that over the last few years there has been an explosion of really small and cheap films on the streaming platforms. For anyone who has ever wondered where all these films are coming from, this documentary appears to have some of the answers. It's really interesting to hear a few of the stories behind the films and the ethos of some of the makers. Fascinating viewing for any low budget film fan.

Easy A (2010)
Lesser than the sum of its parts
11 October 2019
It's a great shame that they make such overt references to classic '80s teen rom-coms, such as 'Say Anything', 'Breakfast Club', 'Sixteen Candles' &c., because what it instantly makes obvious is how much better those films are than this poor attempt. Easy A certainly has some moments, but the whole is lesser than the sum of the parts, making it a hard film to recommend.

A must-see for all sceptics
10 October 2019
I've always been a huge fan of James Randi, and this documentary makes me love his work even more. The Popof story alone makes this film worth watching, but there's tons more about him here. Definitely a must-see for any sceptic.

Touching indie dramedy
10 October 2019
A touching indie dramedy about an ex-couple trying to work out if they can be "just good friends". This film is really evocative and emotional for those of us who have tried to negotiate this in our own lives. Authentic and moving.

Ruined by the ending
9 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Some great filmmaking on display, with fabulous suspense and mystery sustained so well for the majority of the running time. This was so good until the CGI fest at the end ruined it and threw away all the credibility that they had spent so long building. (Minus one star for that.) Part of the story recalls the 1961 Twilight Zone episode 'The Shelter' and the ending recalls 'A Quiet Place' (although that was obviously made after this). Both comparison films are better, though. Such a shame.

Long Lost (2018)
Bizarre and compelling
8 October 2019
With its high tension and dread reminiscent of The Shining, and its plot recalling Ex Machina, this beautifully made mystery thriller is a compelling watch from first to last. It's a total head trip and gets more bizarre the more it goes on, which makes it even more watchable. Definitely worth a look.

Raw and compelling
8 October 2019
A fascinating must-see for fans of American dance, music and street culture. Featuring some wonderful archive footage that's so raw you feel you were really there yourself, this is a compelling tale of a youth culture that should be remembered and celebrated.

All style and no substance
6 October 2019
Imagine a horror film made by Peter Greenaway and you'd be some way to understanding what to expect from this stylish, but vapid French film. With a story that makes so little sense that you'll be scratching your head for hours afterwards, there is precious little to entertain here. Caveat emptor.

A heart-warming odd couple story
25 September 2019
A classic odd-couple story, where the two leads are brothers, rather than misfits pushed together by circumstances. They have some amusing adventures, which take them through some ups and downs. And, most importantly, they learn how to become better brothers in a heart-warming finale. A beautiful, life-affirming tale which rewards your viewing.
