Cutie Honey: Tears (2016)
I wanted to like it...
The special effects are pretty neat, I also liked how dark the future was portrayed.
But as it is quite often the case in japanese movies the dialogues didn't seem real and the acting was most of the time overacted. The action scenes were shot in a very bad close up way so it was rarely the case that you could properly witness what actually happened during those action scenes. There was no shortage of melodramatic scenes that seemed out of place. The dramaturgy is very flat. I cannot recommend watching this.
Shisha no gakuensai (2000)
Quite a beautiful b-movie
All set in a catholic school in Japan a series of crimes happen.
That's basically the plot. It's not clear who's behind it and it kind of continues step by step and remains mostly interesting. So the dramaturgy is well set up.
The acting is mediocre but the main protagonist delivers a good performance.
The music gives this movie an emotional tone, a good one, similar to many animes. The atmosphere is quite dark but it hard for me phrase why exactly, but it is good and fits the scenario.
So if you like good dark crime movies with an artistic edge or if you are a fan of Dedective Conan you should totally watch this.
Wastelander Panda (2012)
Very cool low budget production
I've bought the German Blu-ray release. In this release this series was cut together like a movie, sadly they didn't cut out the company logos at the and of each episode so it kinda threws you off.
But it's a nice production, with a budget of approximately $25000AUS which is more or less 15000 Euros, they really put a lot of cool effects and props into this movie.
Even the acting was convincing for the most. The ideas were good, the music was good and most importantly the dramaturgy was catchy and kept a suspense curve.
I can only recommend watching this especially if you are into the postapocalyptic sub-genre.
So much done right, yet dramaturgically not well concepted
I have finished this movie, but I have to be honest - I almost didn't.
This was not due to bad acting, the acting was good and believable, the atmosphere was even there because of the music and well created props and outfits. But the way this story is told is not really contagious, the dramaturgy hangs itself already quite in the beginning with an unclear plot. Than in the middle part it seems to get it going but it's tedious in many moments due to scenes that were too long and irrelevant. The plotbreak around the end doesn't add anything neccessary to this movie, it seems to start a new story and some minutes later the credits are already rolling.
Sadly not a recommendation.
Beautiful touching movie
It is hardly understandable how it is possible that this movie has less than 100 ratings on imdb (right now in 2018) although it's already 9 years old.
What are people watching if not movies like these? It is for grown ups as well suited as for children.
It is a very good almost magical drama, I can certainly imagine this to be a Ghibli Studios movie with it's charm and depth and incredibly charming characters.
It was not a highly budgeted production which will make some small mistakes forgivable, although it's not a cheap production either. The acting was great and very believable, the dialogues were sometimes and bit artificial but maybe this was just a translation issue.
It's a charming, interesting, exciting and unforgettable movie, watch it.
1920 Bitwa Warszawska (2011)
Hello bad movie
I was so interested in watching this and to see the polish perspective of these events and how Poland more or less looked like back than.
Sadly this was not presented in a believable way, everything looked new, it appeared to be some kind of costume show, hard to describe.
They also behaved kind of modern, but enough about that.
The cinematography was a joke, I have no idea why there was so much focus on Natasza Urbanska, all that singing didn't make much sense to me nor did it contribute to the story. It seemed very overacted, as if every actor was a theatre actor and not a movie actor.
Additionally the music was total out of place most of the time, often scenes appeared to be comedic because of the music and that was not intended.
Ji jie hao (2007)
Watchable but overrated in my opinion
I generally like chinese movies but I'm not so much into war movies, so with this predisposition this movie was an awkward choice to me.
So I kinda enjoyed the first 10min, but after 30min I was really bored and that was the case because it was only fighting scenes in the trenches and ruins, and they really lacked in depth. There were some innovative scenes in terms of action but it was a very dragging plot that didn't really develop any suspense.
So after 30min I have skipped the next 30mins that were also only trenches, ruins and fighting because I honestly had enough of it.
So the second half of the movie is set after the war, and there the movie became interesting again, a lot of insights into communist China and many other things that I don't want to spoil, although that plot was dragging a bit aswell but not too much.
Summed up: First half was a boring action war movie but the second half was a solid drama.
Info for german viewers: The dubbing was really well done, but somehow the Bluray video quality was quite grainy so it was not as clear as it could have been I guess.
Bad acted horror-comedy
Creative yet chaotic horror-mystery anthology short-movies interconnected with each other.
The story is vague yet funny and the atmosphere is definitely there, but with it's shortness and quick changes of characters it fails to deliver any suspense and tension. The acting is as usual in older Hongkong movies rather mediocre and often not convincing.
If you are watching this movie in german, the title is: "Troublesome Night the A-Files" it is totally mysterious why they gave it this title, no information that this is the fifth installment of this anthology movie series nor any information on what "The A-Files" are supposed to be because they are never being mentioned.
If you decide to buy this movie as the german DVD release, better be prepared for some traumatizing picture quality, it's as if they had ripped it from a very low resolution youtube video. The quality is so blurry and corny it's really distracting. But I bought it used for 69 cents so I'm not really complaining.
Heroes & Demons (2012)
Extremely average and uninspired
An anthology of short movies, I have no idea why this is considered here to be released in 2012 yet its status is "coming soon" - I bought this on Bluraydisc in Germany (already used).
But to be a bit more specific: These shortmovies are mostly uninteresting, some of them are funny but it seems that the order in which they were shown is unfortunate in terms of suspense, because the first ones are the best and last ones are the worst. The last story was so bad I almost quit watching.
The dialogues were comedic and weird and the acting was barely believable. Therefore I can't recommend it, not even for the 4 euros that I've wasted buying it. The only reason why I even gave it 5 stars is because of the first 2 shortmovies, these were at least quite funny.
Bez doteku (2013)
This movie is about a girl that gets molested by her stepdad and than suddenly she wants more molestation but by others, so she decides to be a whore. And that's basically it, the performances were well done, all the technical stuff was really good. But what didn't seem to make any sense was the protagonists behaviour, we were left without any explanations to why she made one absurd step after the other... maybe bad writing? Maybe a try to get the viewers to think? If so it didn't deliver enough...
Good movie with well executed cinematography and acting. The writing could have been better because the plot seems kinda over dramatized. The supermarket atmosphere is well done, some performances a bit overacted but what really got me were the camera and colorgrading, it looked so much like an US American production, but more like a series. It was interesting to see where this was going but all the time I had to say to myself "really? isn't that a bit too much it's just a freaking supermarket" ... but maybe that's just me. What I really didn't like how they forcing US clichés on the characters that simply don't fit the polish society.
It's a good movie with a bad end part...
So this story is mainly set in Poland and partially in Germany. The main characters live in Poland and the movie shows the difference after the collapse of the Soviet Union of life standards in Germany and Poland very well. The protagonists admire so much about the western life like certain sport shoes and clothing, music everything. So they want their part of this western lifestyle and they are taking it. Over time they become successful but with success came problems. What started as a realistic good story on how the situation in the beginning of the 90's actually was, became more and more a story about unnecessary excesses, parties and all that stuff ... which was not really interesting anymore because the situations became repetitive and lacked in proper dramaturgy. But the acting was realistic and I would still say it's a "good movie" but not more, if you want to see how people who mainly lived under soviet occupation dealt with the new western options in life this is your movie.
Good movie with many unexpected twists
It's about a meteorological station were some bad things happen. Parallely the investigation after the events is being shown to us by two charismatic policemen. They investigate step by step each clue and we're getting all the pieces of the puzzle piece by piece over the whole movie. There were some moments were I thought "oh no that is such an exaggerated situation/reaction" and but later on some sick twist made it suddenly appear reasonable. I think everyone who is into the crime/thriller/mystery type of movie should try this movie. The whole cinematography was also way better executed than I'm used to from Russian productions.
Polnische Ostern (2011)
This movie is about a grumpy grandpa with many prejudices about Poland. Yet his granddaughter that lives with him is half polish. Her polish loving father reappears and wants the custody for her and get's it and takes her from Germany to Poland. The grandpa is angry and not able to understand how the youth welfare office could allow that. So he visits her and gets confronted with a different Poland than he had imagined but he is stubborn and grumpy and tries many shady actions and well the trouble continues. A very charming, thoughtful movie persiflaging the negative stereotypes that Germans have about Poland giving a fresh interesting view to a very close minded person. The acting is great, the drama and the thoughtful and funny moments fuse into a very entertaining and heart warming movie that I can only recommend.
Dodookmatgo motsala (2002)
First things first, I hate Korean movies and I think there was never one that I've liked. Well now I have seen this weird thing, there it is, the first Korean movie that I really like.
This movie sets the story of a family father of the loser type. He tries so much to be a respectable father but ... life is hard on him. And it is not so much about what exactly he does, it is rather the presentation that becomes quite charming from start to end.
The humor is surprisingly nice and it's not the type of humor that is too much in your face. The same about the thriller like elements it can really produce some tension effectively and grab your attention. It successfully manages to make you wonder what kind of weirdness will happen next.
Of course some things were a bit wacky, some scenes could have been less exaggerated(or even more!?) but if you like movies that are different than watch this. Also it has a kind of anime like feeling to it, so if you like animes this could be your thing as well.
The Night Watchmen (2017)
Cheesy but quite well executed
This movie combines zombie and vampire elements with a spooky clown. Sounds like a popcorn flick? Yeah it kinda is, it leaves the impression as if it could be a pilot for a new series. This movie doesn't take itself seriously and you can feel that all the way because with dialogues as cheesy as these, and vampires reacting in funny comic styled ways you can't expect more. It's entertaining to a certain degree and I'm glad it wasn't any longer, 80 minutes were just about right. The beginning seemed a bit more promising than the movie finally was but, who could have expected something different. The cameraman did a good job and the music was fitting, colorgrading was nicer than expected. Good movie to watch with some friends and laugh here or there.
Majinkaiza: SKL (2010)
It's really bad when you don't know the series...
So this 2011 Anime is some kind of tribute movie to the old Mazinger Anime series from 1974... which is a cool thing but I think most people who watched the old Mazinger won't ever hear about this movie cause they are way too old... But another thing that results from it being the movie to a series is that the creators assumed that you will more or less know what's going on and who the characters are. So I have never watched the old series and the missing character introduction and introduction to this world where apparently giant mechs are quite usual is a problematic thing cause you can't really dive into this movie that way. The animation is good, the English dubbing is also good and I certainly can't complain about the music but after over 20 minutes of watching I was as clueless as in the first minute and the overwhelming amount of characters whom I don't know makes it even harder to follow. I can not recommend this movie to anyone who doesn't know the series, but the people who know it should probably give this movie a try.
Biohazard: Damnation (2012)
Very good action movie that kinda foresaw some political events.
This movie definitely feels like a Resident Evil title to a fan of the game series which is good for all RE players, so most of us will like this movie definitely not like those Mila Yovovych movies... The story is interesting with some small twists, the political aspects even make it nicer. The action which is very well and interestingly performed (or directed) and can actually surprise you in a good way, not like most of those new Hollywood action movies that seem to get more and more boring... Leon S. Kennedy is again the protagonist of this movie, I would choose a different guy this time but they managed to portrait him well in this animated movie, but not as good as in RE: Degeneration. The side-characters were not well enough developed and they lacked a bit in background story and ambitions. I really liked the president of this "Eastern Slav Republic", she was hot, she was well development and simply an intriguing character. Compared to RE: Degeneration this movie felt a bit weaker because I think the dramaturgy didn't go that well and too many things were left unclear which is really sad - maybe some of the games give an explanation, but that certainly doesn't make this movie better. A really interesting thing is how this story actually kinda foresaw the Ukraine/Krim-Crisis in a very abstracted way, because this movie was released a short while before stuff started to go wild over there... even the president kinda reminds heavily of the general-secretary of the Krim Republic (and internet-star) Natalja Poklonskaja which is an (almost?) prophetic coincidence. In a short sentence: Watch it if you like RE, watch if you want to see some good action stuff.
The Silencers (1996)
Slowly developing story and incredibly stunts
This movie developed it's story pretty slowly, like it really needs you to watch it for about 35mins so that you start to know what's really going on. But when you know what's up you will most likely enjoy it, because the story is a good combination of so many science fiction elements you probably know about very well. They made the aliens quite well and in the credits I could even spot some guy who was credited for the alien language... It's really a typical 80's flick in so many ways, but that's why I liked it. The stunts and their coordination was totally amazing. I can't remember any kind of chasing scenes like those with real people and no blue-screen. The ending is a bit less well written but it's OK. It was really a movie me and my friend could enjoy, because it had enough suspense, action, interesting ideas and funny moments ...
I liked it but I don't really know why ...
I read some Punisher Comics and really liked them for their dark atmosphere and more or less discussing that whole thing about if it's OK or not to take justice in your own hands. And guess what? That was not a topic at all in this movie. And why did they have to team up Punisher and Black Widow? I have no idea, they don't really fit together... So the story is basically to stop the evil organization Leviathan from doing a very bad thing. The cool thing is that I liked the idea of this organization cause it was kinda vaguely described and fitted quite well as a placeholder for the Freemasons, Zionists elites, mafia or whoever really controls major crime stuff like weapon and human trafficking in our world. So the antagonist concept worked for me but the execution lacked. The movie starts OK but gets worse and worse, worst point the ending where suddenly some of the Avengers appear and they barely say a word and they are seriously unnecessary for the plot. So that was just a marketing thing I guess. Another thing is why does it have to be an anime style movie? I really don't know but the animation was well done so it's OK yet not the way it should be. This whole movie feels a lot like an 80s action movie and I think that's why I like it but it can't reach the emotional deepness and suspense that many DC animations reached so far - and I'm saying this as a true Marvel fan.
Gurappurâ Baki (1994)
Fun but weird fighting anime
This movie is about fighting. I can tell you that without spoiling anything, this movie mainly consists of 2 two fights in an arena. And guess what? In 45min minutes that is quite a good entertainment. The first fight is OK and has some surprises and the second one gets weird with strange techniques and stuff. The animation itself was well done. 45min is a short time for a story to develop so there isn't really much going on besides fighting. What bothered me was a bit the slight homo-erotic components and transgender looks of the second fighter, that made this anime kinda weird. But still it's enjoyable, if you're in the mood for a not so long anime and you like fighting-sports you can watch this.
Red Hawk: Weapon of Death (1995)
Mediocre plot, good animation
Well my headline sums it up pretty much. The plot is not really well planed or told and seems to be just the cause to show you some battle scenes. The characters are mostly OK but they don't develop that much throughout story. Animations were good, I think it's what kept this movie alive for me. The dialogs were pretty cheesy but maybe it's just a problem that resulted from translating it. This anime clearly has some similarities to Dragonball or it's trying to pay some tribute to Dragonball. I would not really recommend watching this anime, only if you're really into them and if you like those kinds of "fighting-animes" because you will see quite a lot of battles but not really so entertaining as they could be...
It's a joke everything is just incredibly cheap
It's so bad it's a joke, in the first moments I thought this was pornography. The acting is laughable. The plot itself is weird and badly structured but mostly there is no plot. All dialogs are so unrealistic that there isn't anything even slightly believable. And the most offensive thing were the special effects and how cool some of those people try to act although they or their roles are clearly not cool. Seriously I've watched porn that was made way better than this... Even the make up and costumes were so weird and artificial that it was hard to not laugh about it. But maybe it's supposed to be a bad movie for the laughs but who knows...
Modern Family (2009)
This series will brainwash you
It's entertaining but it's not a classic sitcom or comedy series. You won't have any laughter-sounds in the background and it's not so funny compared to classics like Love and Marriage or Simpsons but it's somehow entertaining because the plot is usually quite original. The fact that Ed O'Neil has a major role made me watch this, he's still a good actor and somehow I grew up with him. The gay guys are quite annoying sometimes. It looks a lot like they try to make it a reality TV show but it's not, just camera moves around like that. Weeks after writing this review I had the feeling to add some things I highly dislike: This series promotes a very negative type of family and is full of subliminal messages and tries to brainwash you. They always put the beauty of the 2 mothers Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara very much in front, character is not that important it's always more about their sexiness and makes them awful role-models. The gay-guys are nice people but this series tries to force the impression on you that a gay family with adopted child can work just sooo fine. The way they behave is always so nice and so typical TV-gay and nothing how real gay people behave. What bothers me the most is the way that those children are portraited, with their very feminine way of dressing and adult-like hairstyle they try to make them look like grown up women although they are children and trying to put a sexual focus on the three girls in this series. Especially the oldest daughter has her breasts almost hanging out of her clothes for the whole series and is usually slutty without regret. Even the youngest daughter (the Asian one) looks more like she is styled up for a "young miss Texas" contest than just being a normal little girl. Hands away from this Hollywood-Illuminati try to brainwash you and how you look at society.
Strait Jacket (2007)
Weird Anime with some original ideas but way too many flaws
It was an OK movie to watch and it could have been a good movie if it didn't have that many weird flaws. The animation itself was great, no minus on that one, the music was also nice. The scenario was original, it is set about 100 years ago in an alternative past where magic exists and also magic related crime and demons and stuff like that. This story follows some crime fighters and a vigilante. So one thing that spoiled this movie for me was the fact that all this magic related stuff was a bit misused, to make this more into an action movie instead of a crime drama which would have suited this scenario more. Another big minus is on the part of the dialogs. The way they talk to each other is so unrealistically melodramatic on the one side an on the other side it's so stupid it reminded me of some American 80's action B-Movies. Also some characters tend to weird monologues that simply made me angry. Character development itself is poor. Storyline itself is inconsistent and does not really follow a constant plot, it's even seriously hard to tell in one sentence what happened in this movie. I guess anime fans will like this, and non anime fans won't. I'm sorry for this well done animation being wasted by such a low competence of writing a good screenplay.
