Hell is a place where Swedish humor films are shown
6 February 2020
Wildly Popular bur mostly unfunny film series about a group of apparently intellectually challenged burglars who bungle their way through different heists. All characters are stock, the mastermind, the explosives man, the romeo man and the Woman. All make parodies of themselves being very well-known actors , something that is supposed to be funny. The characters are paper thin and there's little dialogue. The action is mainly slapstick and cartoonish, not unlike Tom and Jerry. Drinking alcohol and saying stupid things is supposed to be wildly funny in Sweden with her unfortunate Germanic cultural roots.

A truly failed serial
8 August 2019
Everything is sub-par in this production, notably the bad script and the horrible acting. How could Netflix sink so low? The whole thing is jarring and laughable at the same time. Money back I say.

Talent wasted
20 June 2019
Pity that Ekman's considerable talent was wasted in these terrible films, technically sub par and with the comic effect based on oafish, drunk and mentally challenged characters. Christendom came very late to Sweden and humor never made it. These films are considered to be very funny in this country. I say no more..

5 March 2019
Laghfably anacronistic, badly directed, badly played. What a mess; and yet it was made by professionals who should have known better..It's a mystery. Easily one of the worst flicks in recent filn history.

Good film but Maximillian Schell, was underused
24 February 2019
Maximillian Schell, a great German actor was not only underused and badly cast but also photographed in a terrible way and made to look like an ogre from an old fairytale. Pity.. Still, a good film.

Watchable in spite of numerous flaws.
7 February 2019
The acting is no more than adequate and often over the top. Characters often behave irrationally, make unprofessional/stupid decisions and seem at times emotionally unbalanced or psychotic. - no astronaut selection screening? The science is at times crazy -laws of Physics still apply in year 2093! - and the technology presented is t often questionable or silly, to say the least, e.g. the use of shotguns in a spaceship sounds like suicide and the lack of failsafe mechanisms and the total lack of control of onboard occurrences at the bridge, (apparently open to all crew) and the lack of overall security measures. The series is obviously very influenced by Kubrick´s masterpieces 2001 A space Odyssey and The Shining among other films. Still, good pacing and good sets and ditto CGI. Some episodes were better than others. All criticism notwithstanding the series is fun to watch. Bring some popcorn!

Boring!
25 January 2019
To my surprise (Spielberg) the film was soul less in spite of impressive visuals that at the same time were the films undoing. All these references were too much. Lost interest..

Boring

I really tried to like this film but I failed. Action scenes are well made but otherwise the film is clichees, the spoiled billionaire, the tough bodyguard, all men were of course murderous pigs and the stepmother a psychopathic witch, all cardboard figures. A truly boring film.

Thought that No 2 was awful but No 3 was watchable, not least because they had some real actors like Banderas.

What the film title means.
16 November 2018
The film's Swedish title "Nattvardsgästerna" only translates as The Communicants. Northern Light is the English promotional title. No dualism meanings here.

Better than the reviews
13 November 2018
I liked this film. I am a history buff but petty things like names, chronologies, stirrups and lots av anachronistic details do not seem matter in this fun movie that wasn't even filmed in Greece. The Rock is pleasure to see and especially the deconstruction of the Heracles/Hercules myth is enjoyable and humorous. Good acting in this context and good cast overall. Recommend it as is.

In spite of big names this is a terminally failed film. Bad script, all cliches, limp direction, totally unfunny, horrid music, felt the urge to turn it off several times

Social customs in Sweden
10 October 2018
Soporific, mildly amusing, cliche' driven film of the Swedish 80s social practices and customs. It gets a low cinematic rating but it is made with heart and was wildly popular in Sweden.

Impressive video game action but terrible acting. The Kid can sadly not act at all and she is irritating. Why was this film made, I wonder..

A film to love end enjoy
1 January 2018
I really love this film! It is a very satisfying rendering of the novel. I do enjoy every time to see all these great actors at the peak of their careers. Sam Neill and Olivia Hussey are very good. The acting is sometimes a bit over the top and some details appear to be incorrect or anachronistic. For instance, King Richard returned to England for a very short time and then left for France where he died. No matter. This film is an excellent piece of work and worth seeing if you enjoy period film.

This is utter rubbish, Greek mythology retold by Bollywood with a total lack of history or good taste. I think that the IQ of the viewers went down a notch or two after watching this travesti.

Nolan's best work to date. Must see!
19 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This must be one of the most gripping and realistic films about WW 2 (not a war film, according to Nolan) ever made. Superbly filmed, edited and acted, it forces you to experience what the people in that decisive event felt, with constant contact with death and annihilation and the desperation felt by several hundred thousand helpless soldiers on the beach surrounded by German troops. The aerial war scenes were magnificent and showed the RAF:s pilots exceptional heroism. An extremely emotional film, a tale of a military defeat turned into a moral victory that influenced the outcome of WW 2 and the world that we live in. Simply a masterpiece.

Unbelievably bad and corny
14 December 2011
I had a hard time realizing that this film was for real, that professional people have worked with it and, most horrible, that it was a commercial success in the United States. I happen to be a friend of the US but this, ah creation, puts a strain on the friendship. If it was a comedy then I must have a problem since I found nothing remotely funny in it. If it's a horror film it didn't scare me. Some of the girls looked very good in their Eve costumes but I once again noticed that American girls have a regrettable tendency to improve on their natural endowments, something that makes me think of dairy producers. Still, I was truly fascinated by the pure bad taste of the film. It was almost poetical in it's badness, wicked people "fornicating", drinking and enjoying themselves and then getting "punished" for that by the fish... A true Dante-an Inferno, albeit in a very infantile level... all the naked, writhing bodies and the fish, The Fish.

Get some Prozac
27 May 2005
I have seen several films made by this director. Although he obviously is talented I find it very hard to put up with the heavy depressive atmosphere that colors all of his films. All characters become wooden, depressive, humorless and irritating. Mourning, that this family is supposed to be feeling, is not at all the same as catatonic stupor or clinical depression as the director seems to imply. To appear to be suicidal is not the same as having a deep emotional inner world. I find this film simplistic, corny, cliché and very predictable.

The director's skilled, no question about that, but he's sadly lacking in humor and vitality. All his films are disturbing in an unpleasant way. Ingmar Bergman and many others do not give you a similar unpleasant feeling although they also deal with difficult questions. I've always felt that this director is very overrated.

I liked it
21 May 2005
I found this film very interesting. It's about very human reactions to extraordinary events. The director is very good and both Ford and Thomas are excellent. Thomas is very feminine too in a initially reserved way. The influence from Kubric, as some people point out, is definitely a positive factor. I cannot understand why the critics so grossly underrate this fine piece of work. I can understand that some people found it depressive, it deals with tragic and difficult things like mourning, betrayal and so on. Life is unfortunately not always sunshine. The feeling described in the film are very real according to me. The director is a person with talent and integrity and a good actor to boot. I will however admit that some people might find the issues here somewhat boring - until they realize that the issues might concern them as well, in some sense.

Boring, boring
19 October 2004
I found this film depressing and boring. The dark colours, the music and the fake rain were rather repetitive and demanding. The talk about heroes and comic books was ludicrous and infantile at best. Willis had some good moments but the depression thing is not suitable for him, he was lifeless and zombielike and both he and his wife appeared to suffer from a Major Depression while the son apparently freaked out and showed also some alarming psychiatric symptoms. I really cannot understand how a film was made out of all this rubbish. I'd also like to confess a terrible secret: I din't like 6th Sense either. This is a Money-back situation for me.

Worth seeing
15 March 2002
Regina Lund played well and the photo was pretty good. The atmosphere very Swedish about life in a village and all the secrets and all things people don´t want to talk about, very realistic in my opinion. It+s a description of someone coming to painful insight. The heroine´s daddy was a bully and a child molester, among other unpleasant things. It´s not a masterpiece but it´s fair cinema.
