Alan of Stills & Mills does a fine job with "Fashion Model", loaded with industry (porn, not fashion) in-jokes and campy performances led by that of Charlotte Stokely. What keeps this from being a classic is serious miscasting of the lead role, quite a blunder given the wealth of young girl/girl talent to draw upon.
Story is pure corn: Lily Rader plays a teen from the sticks (Plainsville, CA) who heads to L.A. to become an instant top fashion model. She doesn't apply to Tyra Banks but instead barges in on the leading agent Angela White and miraculously gets her wish against all odds (and logic).
I especially enjoyed Part One of this DVD also produced as a 3-part miniseries by Girlsway. Charlotte is seeking a model to spearhead her new "Ambition" campaign for her Eternity Cosmetics firm and insists on Aiden Ashley for the job. Angela counters with many other of her girls, and here the namedropping begins.
What about Riley, the former It-Girl, and as we fans all know = Riley Reid. They plug the previous "Missing" campaign, actually referring to Stills & Mills hit miniseries starring Reid. How about Carter, of course that being porn star Carter Cruise. Angela points out that Carter has recently been sprung from her contract with Braun Agency, that's Axel Braun the horrible pornographer who indeed had Carter signed as he made many a Marvel ripoff for Wicked Pictures.
And not to forget, the gals namedrop Mark Spiegler, the real-life agent who in fact supplies man of the girls for not only Girlsway but competitor porn labels liek Sweetheart Video. So instead of inside stuff about the fashion game, Alan's script (and he actually has written dialog for a change instead of the usual improv) makes fun of the Adult Entertainment industry.
I only watch this material on DVD, but in minseries form it is seriously imbalanced, with the two first episodes rounding off at an hour each while Part 3 is 10 minutes or show shorter. Part One titled "Small Town Girl in the Big City" features lots of verbal exposition (no sex at all for the first 20 minutes) and then Angela bringing out her massive breasts as she tries on the thin teen Lily for size.
Part Two: "Doing Whatever It Takes" has great style to start as model Aiden Ashley is air-brushed with body paint simulating lingerie, and then a foursome erupts as fashion photographer Abigail Mac joins in to take advantage of both models. This daisy-chain sequence is certainly the show's highlight.
Finale called "What Have You Done for Me Lately?" has Charlotte & Angela ganging-up on Lily with plenty of orgasms to go around.
Problem is Lily Rader at the center. She is a rather plain young thing, frequently appearing in throwaway videos ranging from fetish to gonzo, and hardly suitable as a leading lady in an acting-oriented feature like this one. She's tall enough to be a model (especially when compared to diminutive but busty White and Mac), but otherwise is hardly the raving beauty that the cast considers her to be. Why Stills & Mills thought they could get away with this casting can probably be attributed to hubris.
