The Rise of Skywalker Falls Out of The Box Office Top 10 Before Jumanji: The Next Level
For the first time since the movie hit theaters on December 20, The Rise of Skywalker was not in the top ten at the domestic box office over the weekend. The finale to the Skywalker saga earned another $1.3 million over the Valentine's Day/President's Day weekend, which was good enough for the number 15 spot, sandwiched between Gretel & Hansel ($1.4 million) and Jojo Rabbit ($1 million). Yet, Jumanji: The Next Level, which came out a week before Episode IX, is still sitting comfortably in the top ten.

With another $5.5 million, representing less than a 1 percent drop week-to-week, Jumanji: The Next Level landed in the eight spot this weekend in its tenth week of release following its debut on December 13. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was in its ninth week. This is not to say that the latest from director J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm is a financial failure. It's not. To date, it has

Box-Office Weekend: Sonic the Hedgehog Outruns the Birds of Prey
Presidents’ Day weekend belonged soundly to Sonic the Hedgehog, which enjoyed a debut atop the box-office weekend. The film took in $57 million over the weekend, outpacing second-place finisher (last weekend’s top film) Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn by approximately $40 million.

Although Birds of Prey lost the top spot this weekend, it still managed to bring in another $17.1 million to give the film a two-week total of $59.3 million. This was just ahead of the second debut of the weekend, Fantasy Island, which took the third spot with a tally of $12.4 million. Similarly, fourth place belonged to another debut as The Photograph brought in $12.3 million, to finish just behind Fantasy Island.

Meanwhile, Bad Boys for Life dropped from the second spot all the way to fifth adding only $11.3 million over the weekend. This gives the film a five-week total of $181.3 million. Similarly dropping over the

‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Joins Top Videogame Movies As ‘Birds of Prey’ Loses Box-Office Altitude
Two holidays, four new releases, and a few Oscar boosts made for a strong weekend. Though it fell behind last month’s stellar three days around Martin Luther King Day (which featured “Bad Boys for Life”), we saw an improvement of 25%, or $30 million, over the same dates last year. It’s another positive sign in a year that has seen all but one weekend improve on 2019: So far, total grosses are running about 15% ahead ($1.45 million) of last year’s anemic start.

Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” led the pack, and Valentine’s Day bolstered “The Photograph” (Universal) and “Downhill” (Searchlight). However, the Will Packer-produced romance fared far better than the Julia Louis-Dreyfuss and Will Farrell’s English-language remake of “Force Majeure.” And both will fall short of Blumhouse’s critically reviled, PG-13 horror take on the 1970s TV series “Fantasy Island” (Sony).

Post-Oscars, both “1917” (Universal) and Best

Awkwafina to Star as Gambling Guru Kelly Sun in ‘The Baccarat Machine’

The Farewell may have been snubbed by the Academy this year, but Awkwafina delivered a deeply felt dramatic performance, proving she's much more than the comic relief in movies like Crazy Rich Asians and Jumanji: The Next Level. Her versatility reminds me of Melissa McCarthy, and not only do I firmly believe that an Oscar nomination is in her future, but she just signed on to a new movie that could very well prove to be her Can You Ever Forgive Me? when you think about it. The working title is The Baccarat Machine, and it's based on …
