Patrick reluctantly agrees to go to his first big social event since recovering. Together with his good friend Johnny Hall, he attends a glittering party in the English countryside hosted by former hippie Bridget - now married, titled and miserable - and attended by Princess Margaret as well as a number of Patrick's old flames. Amid a crowd of social dragonflies, Patrick searches for redemption and capacity for forgiveness, while confronting his past in a myriad of ways. Written by ahmetkozan

Low-key, high quality entertainment
3 June 2018 | by mathomas-28053See all my reviews

Episode one shows us how Patrick (Benedict Cumberbatch) spends his whole life abusing drugs and alcohol. Episode two shows us his horrific childhood, the reason for his addictive behavior.

Episode three (of five) is perhaps a turning point. He stays sober for a few days, goes to an AA or NA meeting (but doesn't participate), and then goes to a high society party (and tries not to drink). The party is the central event in this episode. There are wonderful and fascinating portraits of all kinds of people, gorgeous costumes and cinematography, excellent acting, and a little profound soul-searching. Patrick even meets a woman he might possibly want to get to know.

Low key, wonderful entertainment for a lazy Saturday evening.
