Interesting Moments Here and There, but Overall Underwhelming
27 October 2019 | by amirmustafaaSee all my reviews

I wanted to love this movie because I love wuxia films, but this one fell a little flat for me. My biggest problem with this movie is that the first hour is kind of boring; it was slow, claustrophobic, and pure buildup but not exciting buildup because the characters weren't interesting. When the big battle happens halfway through, the movie picks up mostly due to how technically brilliant it is, and it stays interesting the rest of the way even if you can see the ending from a mile away.

This movie is watchable and it does have some brilliant parts sprinkled throughout, but the absolutely uninteresting characters bring this movie down. it's decent, but I definitely wouldn't consider it to be anywhere close to the top of great wuxia films like the reviews suggested it was.
