Review: Mike Flanagan's 'Doctor Sleep' Film is Not to Be Overlooked

In 2011, Mike Flanagan wrote, edited, and directed his first feature, the low-budget indie horror Absentia. After the success of his Kickstarter-funded indie film, Flanagan got the opportunity to adapt his own 2006 short, Oculus: Chapter 3 – The Man with the Plan, as a feature. The Blumhouse-produced Oculus made $45 million at the box office on a $5 million budget, signifying Flanagan as a unique up-and-coming voice in the genre. Then in 2016, the Salem, Massachusetts native cemented himself as a genuine horror auteur with the releases of Hush, Before I Wake, and Ouija: Origin of Evil, all three of which he wrote, edited, and directed. A year later, Flanagan was called up to the majors, first adapting the Stephen King novel Gerald's Game as a Netflix Original Film and, shortly thereafter, the critically acclaimed 10-episode series The Haunting of Hill House, based on Shirley Jackson's 1959 book. Now, the seasoned filmmaker takes on Doctor Sleep,

For Awards, the Divide Between U.S., Global TV Shows Is Blurred Thanks to Streaming
Back in May, “Killing Eve” killed it at the BAFTA TV awards, winning the drama series prize as well as best actress for Jodie Comer and supporting actress for Fiona Shaw.

Killing Eve” is a phenomenal show, and deserves the accolades it has received, including a Golden Globe earlier this year for star Sandra Oh. But those three BAFTA wins came with a bit of controversy. In allowing the series to score 14 total nominations between its TV awards and TV craft awards, BAFTA (aka the British Academy of Film and Television Arts) bent its own rules.

In order for a program to be eligible, the org usually requires it to premiere in the U.K., and for creative control to reside inside the U.K. “Killing Eve,” however, first aired in the United States, on BBC America. The show was also first developed for BBC America. As a U.S.

Stana Katic Series ‘Absentia’ Nears Season 3 Renewal At Amazon

Stana Katic Series ‘Absentia’ Nears Season 3 Renewal At Amazon
Amazon is finalizing a third-season renewal of thriller Absentia, starring and executive produced by Castle alumna Stana Katic, I have learned.

The full second season of Absentia, commissioned for Sony Pictures Television’s international networks, premiered June 14 on Amazon Prime Video in the U.S. as well as in select markets globally, following its March 26 debut on Axn. I hear the series is already gearing up to begin production on Season 3 in Bulgaria where the first two seasons were also shot.

Created by Gaia Violo and Matt Cirulnick and based on a pilot script originally written by Violo, Absentia centers on FBI Agent Emily Byrne (Katic), who had disappeared without a trace and was declared dead after hunting one of Boston’s most notorious serial killers. Six years later, Emily was found in a cabin in the woods, barely alive, and with no memory of the years she was missing.

Absentia Season 2 Episode 10 Review: Accomplice

  • TVfanatic
Wow! Absentia Season 2 Episode 10 ended with a crazy twist that was scary, heartbreaking, and highly satisflying.

Because let's face it, we all hated Alice, at least a little.

And that was before we knew what she'd actually done to Nick and Flynn

I can recall during Absentia Season 1, how I'd desperately try to see things from Alice's point of view.

It couldn't have been easy to be Flynn's only mom for so many years, only to find that the mother she thought was dead was very much alive.

It would have been difficult for any step-parent to let someone they'd never met and didn't completely trust get close to the child they loved.

But Alice becoming Nick's wife and Flynn's step-mother after they tragically lost Emily wasn't by chance.

It was all part of a plan.

Absentia Season 2 Episode 9 Review: Committed

  • TVfanatic
A huge piece of the Fentanyl Killer puzzle fell into place during Absentia Season 2 Episode 9 but it's clear there are still holes left in this mystery.

But Emily, Cal, and Nick won't stop until they fill in all of the blanks, especially since Flynn's future is on the line.

Getting access to the Catalyst Database allowed Emily and Cal to answer a lot of questions.

Unfortunately, uncovering that same information is what got Detective Tommy Gibbs killed.

As much as I hate that Tommy is dead, I am relieved that he didn't take his own life. Although he was obviously upset over the suspension and the status of he and Emily's relationship, I just didn't see him as being suicidal.

Finding out that Dr. Odewale was a part of this horrifying conspiracy shook Emily to the bone, not only because she trusted him but

Absentia Season 2 Episode 8 Review: Aggression

  • TVfanatic
There was one shocking revelation after another on Absentia Season 2 Episode 8 but I was disappointed with a couple of secrets that remained hidden.

First, was that we still don't know for certain whether Tommy committed suicide or was murdered.

Second, Alice didn't come clean about her affair.

The heart to heart between Alice and Nick was a long time coming, and Nick took responsibility for emotionally disappearing on their family and did his best to explain why it happened.

I felt like a coward. I wanted to tell you that. I’m no hero. I ran from a…I ran away from our son when he was struggling because I didn’t know how to help him and then I ran away from you after the miscarriage because I was afraid to face the pain, honestly. We lost a child and I wasn’t there for you, for us.

Absentia Season 2 Episode 7 Review: Boom

  • TVfanatic
I refuse to believe what I saw at the end of Absentia Season 2 Episode 7.

Even though it looked as though Detective Tommy Gibbs had committed suicide, I'm still not accepting it.

But unfortunately, Emily probably will.

I know that Tommy was at a very low place in his life.

He had to break up with the woman he loved after she inexplicably beat the hell out of him and then he was suspended from the Boston Police Department.

Tommy may have believed that the only way he was of any use to Emily was to help her with this investigation, and without his badge and gun he was of no use at all.

So, on paper, Tommy killing himself makes sense.

But that doesn't mean I'm convinced.

Absentia Season 2 Episode 6 Review: Cover

  • TVfanatic
While Emily was getting her footing back on the job, Nick's life felt like it was falling apart on Absentia Season 2 Episode 6.

Emily Byrne is horrible when it comes to personal relationships but when it comes to her job, she's a pro.

And going undercover in Moldova might be just the thing to get her mojo back.

Emily and Cal work exceptionally well together, even during the moments when they are quietly sniping at one another.

They've got cover stories, no back up, and only each other to rely on and that appears to work for them.

Absentia: Season Two Viewer Votes

Can Emily Byrne come to grips with her life during the second season of the Absentia TV show on Amazon? As we all know, the Nielsen ratings typically play a big role in determining whether TV shows are cancelled or renewed. Amazon and other streaming platforms, however, collect their own data. If you've been watching this TV series, we'd love to know how you feel about the season two episodes of Absentia. We invite you to rate them for us here.

An Amazon crime thriller, Absentia stars Stana Katic, Patrick Heusinger, Cara Theobold, Neil Jackson, Angel Bonanni, Richard Brake, Paul Freeman, and Patrick McAuley. In the drama's second season, former FBI agent Emily Byrne seeks answers for her time in captivity, while trying to rebuild her family and identity, until a deadly mystery threatens her fragile stability.

Absentia Season 2 Episode 5 Review: Bolo

  • TVfanatic
The terrorist case against Tyler Brandon Mills took a strange turn on Absentia Season 2 Episode 5, and as much as it was unexpected, that's not what left me shaking my head.

That's part of the fun of Absentia.

The investigations are absorbing and intriguing but it's the characters that continue to confound me.

Tyler Mills is one disturbed and scary guy.

He killed over one hundred people and not only does he show no remorse, he seems to have enjoyed doing it.

One hundred and twenty people. It filled me up. Let me go and I’ll give you an encore.

Absentia Season 2 Episode 4 Review: Offenders

  • TVfanatic
I didn't think it was possible but Absentia Season 2 Episode 4 went to an even darker place.

Yet, oddly enough, my sense of dread had nothing to do the Fentanyl Killer claiming two more victims.

That churning in the pit of my stomach was caused by Tyler the terrorist stalking a child and Emily Byrne.

When that little girl began to wander down the path in the woods, I knew some horrible fate was awaiting her and waiting for it to happen was the worst kind of anticipation.

It seemed obvious that the father was packing up the car to leave, so there was no reason for Tyler to kill him. He only had to wait a few more minutes and the man and his child would have been gone.
