Film director Billy Wilder said whenever he made a movie he didn't want to bash his audience over its head with the message of his film. Subtlety, said Wilder in the book "The 15 Geniuses Behind The Lens," is far better in getting the point across.
Trouble is in Amy Schumer's latest film, the writing/directing pair of Kohn and Silverstein overtly get their message out about people needing to possess confidence in order to surmount any physical or mental defects they may have. It is a noble lesson to take away when leaving the theater, but the constant drumbeat of this film's theme is akin to listening to a skipping record. We got the memo about confidence midway through the movie, yet like a jackhammer, the moral of the story keeps pounding away.
There are some funny scenes, such as the bikini contest that Amy partakes in, as well as her performance behind the reception desk. Yet IFP gets too serious with itself towards the latter stages, and what should be a continuance of Miss Schumer's humorous delivery is shuntered aside for a preaching exhibit. But most of the women in the audience loved this film, so who am I, a male, to say the movie didn't hit the right cord for the fairer sex.
