Kim's Convenience tells the funny and heartfelt story of the Kim family. Mr. and Mrs. Kim are Korean Canadian convenience store owners who have worked hard to give their now-twenty-something children, Janet and Jung, a better life in Canada. This single camera comedy finds laughter in the trials of running a literal 'Mom and Pop' shop while raising kids in a culture not quite your own.

Great Show!
2 November 2016 | by ch-33158See all my reviews

I have been seeing the advertisement for the show in the subway. I finally saw the show and it was really fantastic! The show is actually very funny. Characters are well-sketched out. It reflects on the delicate lines of inter-cultural communications that might occur in real life.

I had already seen the play, which was created before the show. The play was great in illuminating the stories of resilience, love and perseverance. It seems the show has added more story than the play, which makes the show more colourful and interesting.

The first episode does a nice job of exploring the question of gender identity. Ultimately, this show is not just about Korean immigrants, but immigrant experience in Western countries and how they come to terms with their cultural identity on a day-to-day basis. At the same time, it is set in the backdrop of post-economic recession Canada, which is undergoing tremendous demographic and cultural changes.

The show is a welcome addition in diversifying television dramas by focusing on under-represented demographics, such as Asians in film and drama production in North America. The show has different charms in exploring the intricacies of experiences of integration, apart from Fresh Off the Boat. The show rooted in the multi-cultural make-up of Toronto and does a great job of navigating the grey space of inter-cultural communications.

Having come across the convenience store on which the show is based on in Regent Park, the show offers a refreshing glimpse into the multi-cultural demographics of Toronto.
