The Labyrinth

Versailles returns for a second series but I thought the opening episode was underwhelming although it had a few surprises up its sleeve.

Louis is waking up in the middle of the night and sleepwalking. He is found in the pond. His mistress jokes that one day he will bring her a fish from the pond.

Fabien rescues the Dauphin and captures Rohan who refuses to talk. The conspirators have other spies in the camp and one of the king's ministers Reynaud is poisoned making his wife wealthy. Reynaud brought up many of Cassel's lands confiscated by the king. Cassel is now in ruins, he still has his wits, he is still scheming but the shadow of a man he once was and the others jest as to how far he has fallen.

Philippe upset at Henriette's death has fled Versailles. Louis plans to find another wife for him, someone from a family where Louis can make an alliance with if he plans to go to war with Holland.

Louis surprises his court with a bold and maybe a reckless move. The disgraced Cassel is made the new minister of justice.
