The team investigates a vehicular homicide. Witnesses says the victim was acting strange, one witness, a mother who took her son out, says he was looking at her strangely. They learn that the victim was a convicted sex offender. They talk to his girlfriend who says he was wrongfully convicted, and that he was trying to get his life in order, but when she tells them what she thinks he was doing, it doesn't jive with what he was doing when he died. They find that he had pictures of the boy he was looking at when he died. So they assume the boy was about to be kidnapped which is what happens. So they try to find out who did it. Jake tries to come back but his replacement reminds him that his leave still has a week to go but Jake decides to stay and help with the investigation. He later learns the Captain has no intention of leaving.
