Funny Comedy About a Flawed but Loving Family
27 March 2016 | by Tom_GraysonSee all my reviews

The Real O'Neals is a fun family comedy with surprisingly beautiful dynamics among the 3 teenage children, who are - despite the flaws of their family - very loving and supportive of one another.

I have always been a fan of the hilarious Martha Plimpton and she certainly doesn't disappoint here. I can burst in laughter just at the mere sight of her facial expressions.

Noah Galvin, as her cute son Kenny, has great comic timing, while Mad Men's Jay R. Ferguson has fine chemistry with Plimpton that makes you root for their characters to work out their differences.

Although I feel the writing hasn't reached its full potential yet, that's hardly unusual as most comedies take time to figure out their characters and see what works best (case in point - ABC's #2 comedy The Goldbergs). But, there is definitely immense potential here if ABC is patient enough and takes time to nurture this fine comedy and help it grow.

Not surprisingly, most of the criticism of this series here on IMDb and elsewhere is not based on the show's own merits, but rather comes from people with antiquated anti-gay agenda, who also believe their religion is beyond reproach and have loathed The Real O'Neals before even seeing a single second of the pilot.

As such, an open-minded viewer looking for a fun and endearing family comedy should instantly dismiss these bigoted critics and give it a chance.
