Due to his 'mob connections', Castle is barred from official cooperation with the NYPD, so he passed the private detective exam and pops up 'independently' in his mates' next case. Kate and her team however are tempted but not allowed to team up with him, even if he proves more resourceful than all their resources, which also puts a strain on marital peace.

As encouragement for Castle to pursue his venture as a private investigator, Beckett gifts him with a magnifying glass and a deerstalker, about which he is excited because of the association with Sherlock Holmes. The deerstalker is never actually mentioned in any of Conan Doyle's stories, and largely became associated with Holmes because of pop culture depictions of him; he was quite fashion conscious and, given his status in London society, would not have made the faux pas of wearing such a garment.
