  • Claire and Dougal are questioned at the local garrison, and Dougal is treated with hostility and disdain by the British occupiers. Claire lets down her guard, but her headstrong opinions get her into trouble again, and she discovers the true nature of Black Jack Randall when left alone with him.

  • Claire and Dougal accompany English Lt. Jeremy Foster to local army headquarters where she is received by the commander of the English army in Scotland, Brigadier General Lord Thomas. She thoroughly charms the garrison's officers at dinner and Lord Thomas offers her an escort to Inverness which will put her in close proximity to the stones and perhaps a means to return to her own time. Things take a turn when Captain Black Jack Randall arrives. He manages to goad her into revealing her admiration for the Scots. He continues to interrogate her and seemingly opens up to her but Black Jack is nothing if not determined. She and Dougal are allowed to leave but she is ordered to report the next day. Dougal can think of only one way to keep her out of the English army's hands: she needs to become a Scot and the only way for her to do that is for her to marry a Scotsman.

  • British Lieutenant Jeremy Foster's undercover mission forces Claire to deny being the MacKenzies' prisoner, to avoid Jamie's party being arrested, and to come with Dougal to the garrison HQ, where the clan war chief brave an icy reception and implied insults from the dining party of brigadier general Lord Thomas. After the general's departure, the rough garrison commander, captain Jack Randall, perverts his orders to escort her Inversness. Instead he demonstrates his scary ruffian cruelty on an trembling corporal, then enjoys explaining to Claire his twisted mindset during Jamie's public flogging, which he doubled just for 'insolently failing to weep and beg' as a power game, finishing with a brutal torture-interrogation of the suspect spy. When he gives her a short reprieve, Dougal takes her to spring to 'ascertain' by superstition she's no traitor and offers a single way out: marriage, to Jamie, who isn't a good catch for any Scots lady anyway, and genuinely agrees.
