Storyline

During the American War of Independence, insurgent Ichabod Crane, an English-born professor and civil rights pioneer, is among the pile of victims of a headless, ax-wielding Redcoat. Two centuries later, both are resurrected when their graves are disturbed. Sheriff August Corbin, whose county includes Sleepy Hollow village, is among the latest axed victims. However he leaves notes which are found by his headstrong deputy, lieutenant Abbie Mills, and the arrested, fascinating Ichabod, whom captain Irving orders to be evaluated in a psych ward. Ichabod gets visits from the ghost of his wife Katrina, who reveals being a good witch from an order fighting the evil one in league with the four riders of the Apocalypse, which includes Death, in the shape of the Redcoat. Trivia

The city sign that the bird lands on just after Crane is struck by the car shows the population of Sleepy Hollow at 144,000 the same number the book of Revelation indicates as those that are servants of God and have been sealed on the forehead. See more »

There are frequent references to the Book of Revelations, plural. The actual Biblical book is Revelation, singular. See more »

Quotes

Lt. Abbie Mills: Two hundred and fifty years, huh? Civil War didn't wake you? Noisy neighbors to the south. Did you get up to pee? Don't know about you, but I'm getting up to pee every 75, 80 years.
Ichabod Crane: Are you quite finished? Because most of what you say is unintelligible gibberish to me. It's like watching a chicken cluck. And when did it become acceptable for ladies to wear trousers?

Even Better on the Binge
9 October 2018 | by GunnersMateSee all my reviews

With the series finales long since broadcast, Sleepy Hollow is ripe for the joy of binge-watching. This pilot episode is light on actual reasonable police procedure (best to accept it now, as it is a constant companion of the series), but the chemistry of the Abbie and Crane mixed with a wonderfully over the top blend of skewed Biblical prophecy, not-quite-history tales, fantasy lore, and quirky supporting characters makes for a fabulous ride.

Pilot packs a musket-load of backstory and lore, but the entertainment value of how Crane so easily (and comically) accepts his new reality and how Abbie so readily accepts the existence of both time-traveling-Crane and the supernatural world lays the foundation for stories centering on some wonderfully dark and oddly charismatic villains. Sleepy Hollow is an indulgent adventure and a terrific modern spin on the Icabod Crane story and cartoon that many grew up on. Take a weekend and enjoy the binge.
