Cole, a young transgender Christian man, is growing up in rural North Carolina. With his girlfriend, Ashley, he faces significant challenges, including hostile family and church members, and crippling financial burdens. Through all of these trials, their vision of an accepting God never falters. With a small community of supportive friends, the couple manages to create their own extended family, and their search for love and belonging leads them to a radical revision of what faith and a church can be.
DEEP RUN is the coming of age story of Cole, a gutsy trans gender Christian youth growing up in rural North Carolina. It is an intimate exploration of a world of young outsiders in an insular Christian community. The harsh, gritty reality of their daily lives is tempered by their sense of humor and constant faith, which serves to keep them afloat amidst constant challenges. With a small community of supportive friends and relatives, and his girlfriend, Ashley, Cole creates his own extended family. His search for love and belonging leads him to a radical revision of what faith and a church can be.
Exiled by her family and rejected by an ex-partner, 17-year-old Spazz has no one to lean on for support in rural North Carolina. But when Spazz falls in love again and summons up the courage to become Cole, a strong-willed trans-man, his candid humor and steadfast, all-inclusive Christian beliefs counter the bigotry he experiences daily.
