The film depicts the eponymous Leatherface as a functional human being that has his mind and face destroyed through extensive trauma. However, this concept of Leatherface's backstory is not exclusive to the film. The narration to the third issue of the 1991 comic also titled "Leatherface" describes his backstory, "He was born an imbecile. Then bad things were done to him that made him hurt and made him fear. Bad things that virtually destroyed what little mind he had. Born an idiot and made a monster, scarcely human." On the DVD commentary for Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990), director Jeff Burr stated "I would say he's mindless as result of injury. I would have to assume that the catastrophic injury that destroyed his face may have destroyed his vocal cords." (46:50-48:00)
