In the aftermath of the events of "Ground Zeroes" and the destruction of Militaires Sans Frontières, Big Boss falls into a coma. Nine years later, he awakes and forms a new mercenary group, the Diamond Dogs. Now under the guise of the codename "Venom Snake", he ventures into Afghanistan during the Soviet war to track down the men responsible for MSF's destruction. Along the way, he becomes reacquainted with his former rival Ocelot and encounters a unit of warriors robbed of their past, present and future. While he and Kazuhira "Kaz" Miller are initially driven to exact revenge, Snake soon unearths a plot by the Cipher organization to develop a weapon with the potential to surpass even the Metal Gear system, and his mission quickly switches focus to ending this new threat.
Not for any nation. Not for any ideology. Not for justice. Not for honor. Not for power. Not for the future. Not for love. Not for peace. Only for revenge.

Quiet isn't the first character in the Metal Gear series with supernatural abilities, even though hers seem to be more extreme than those previously depicted. In Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater alone, the entire Cobra Unit, save The Boss herself, has superhuman abilities (though The Boss possibly has some supernatural force permeating her, evidenced when the lilies turn red and her scar moves out of her body when she dies), along with Colonel Volgin, who commands lightning from his body. One of the gameplay mechanics is called "Reflex Mode", which slows down the time from the player's point-of-view when they have to react to having been visually caught by the enemy. However, the scientific definition for the word 'reflex' is "an involuntary movement in response to a stimulus." The correct term would be "Reaction Mode", as the scientific definition for 'reaction time' is "the elapsed time between a sensory stimulus and the subsequent behavioral response." See more

There is a final conversation after the credits. In it, Miller and Ocelot discuss Big Boss's plans. While Ocelot supports it, Miller, disgusted at his former ally's deception, agrees to continue assisting the Phantom and Big Boss's sons only in hopes of contributing to the real Big Boss's downfall. The two nonetheless agree to work together until the inevitable conflict between Big Boss's sons begins. See more
