The Walking Dead: why Carl’s hair is so long & other tricks

A round-up on the practical effects Greg Nicotero and co. used to achieve memorable moments in The Walking Dead (incl. Carl's hair)…

Warning: contains spoilers for The Walking Dead seasons 1-6. And gory images. Ugh.

Hairdressers exist after the undead apocalypse. We know this to be the case in The Walking Dead not only because we met one—Rick’s ill-fated girlfriend Jessie—but because the majority of characters have been able to maintain some kind of post-global destruction ‘do. Carol has a pixie crop. Daryl sports a complicated homage to Link from Zelda, and you could happily roll marbles around on Abraham’s flat-top all the live-long day.

One character though, has thus far defied the scissors: Carl Grimes. And now, after the events of season 6B, we know why.

“There’s a reason why [Carl’s] hair’s so long,” VFX veteran and director Greg Nicotero said in this Kimberley Potts interview.

Stars: Andrew Lincoln, Steven Yeun, Chandler Riggs, Melissa Suzanne McBride, Chad Coleman, Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Christian Serratos, Michael Cudlitz, Alanna Masterson, Josh McDermitt, Andrew J. West | Created by Robert Kirkman

Everyone’s favourite zombie comic book based TV series is back and starts when we left off at season 4, with Rick and company locked inside a railcar. Before long they’re dragged out into a warehouse where two Terminus workers are butchering a body for meat, revealing the cannibalistic nature of the residents. As the workers begin executing the prisoners, Gareth, the leader, questions Rick about the bag he hid in the woods and threatens Bob until he gets what he wants. Soon after though, a huge explosion and some gunfire goes off, giving Rick the chance he needs to start his escape.

Meanwhile, Carol, Tyreese and Judith find a Terminus ally called Martin after hiding from some walkers.

Don't Talk to "Strangers" on "The Walking Dead:" A Television Review

*there are major spoilers here. Director: David Boyd. Writer: Robert Kirkman. Cast: Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Chandler Riggs, Danai Gurira and Melissa McBride. Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and his crew have survived Terminus. Now, this growing group have found another character to add to the pack. Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam), a cowardly priest, has a refuge and a few secrets. Lots of sideplots were developed further in this showing. Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) has a trap in store for the survivors. A few cannibals have survived their defeat, at the hands of Carol (Melissa McBride). A kidnapper is about and Bob will never look the same. This episode was quite a bit slower than the previous episode, "No Sanctuary." As well, some of the night scenes obfuscated the visual frame. But, "Strangers" was still an exciting outing. Everything is going well for Rick and his current company. But then,

'The Walking Dead' Season 5 Premiere Recap: You're the Butcher, or You're the Cattle

It's been pretty clear over the past four seasons of "The Walking Dead" that the titular zombies are merely sideline characters in their own apocalypse, as the human stars of the show - and the crazy, high stakes drama that they manufacture - have been the main focus of the series since its inception. So it was a pleasant surprise to see a huge horde of the undead play such a key role in Sunday's fifth season premiere, as zombies overtook an explosion-rattled Terminus to finish the job that Carol (Melissa McBride) started.

Yes, we finally learn the truth about Terminus - yep, they're definitely cannibals - only to see the settlement destroyed by episode's end, as Rick (Andrew Lincoln) makes good on his vow at the close of season four to prove that their captors were "screwing with the wrong people." But it's Carol who sets that plot in motion,

Watch the first four minutes of The Walking Dead’s season 5 premiere

The Walking Dead returns for its hotly-anticipated fifth season tonight, and yesterday at the New York Comic Con AMC gave fans in attendance a special sneak peak by screening the first four minutes of the season five opener. The footage has now made its way online (for U.S. audiences only), so if you can’t wait for the episode to air, you can check out the opening right here…

Season Four of The Walking Dead ended with Rick and the group outgunned, outnumbered, and trapped in a train car awaiting a grim fate. Season Five picks up shortly thereafter. What follows is a story that weaves the true motives of the people of Terminus with the hopeful prospect of a cure in Washington, D.C., the fate of the group’s lost comrades, as well as new locales, new conflicts, and new obstacles in keeping the group together and staying alive.

'Walking Dead': Watch the First 4 Minutes of Season 5!

'Walking Dead': Watch the First 4 Minutes of Season 5!
The tables have turned on the citizens of Terminus in the first 4 minutes of The Walking Dead's Season 5 premiere No Sanctuary, which just debuted online before the full episode debuts tomorrow.

Andrew J. West stars as Gareth, who finds himself and his men in some unsuspected trouble after having locked Rick and the other survivors away in a trailer car.

Always the survivalist, Rick and his crew use their clothing to prepare weapons in facing off with the suspected cannibals of this so-called sanctuary. It's unclear who has the upper hand after a gas canister is thrown, but it soon becomes clear that an orgy of violence is about to play out in some quite disturbing and graphic ways, setting the stage for the rest of this year.

Don't miss this exclusive first look from the Season 5 Premiere of The Walking Dead, the results of which will play out tomorrow night!

'The Walking Dead' Season 5 Characters Ranked From Most to Least Expendable

You know characters are going to kick the bucket on a show called "The Walking Dead" -- it's just a matter of which characters and when. The Powers That Be like to claim "no one is safe" on Twd, but please. Certain people are definitely safe. (Cough*Daryl*Cough) But certain people are definitely expendable, too. There are currently about 16 regular cast members going into Season 5, not even counting new guys like Gareth at Terminus and Father Gabriel Stokes, who made a brief appearance in the Comic-Con trailer. So we won't cry too hard if they pare it down to a dirty dozen or fewer. We all have our favorites -- and honestly we're not wishing death on any of these guys -- but some storylines are more crucial to the series than others. On that note, here's a character ranking, from most expendable to least.

'Walking Dead' Season 5 Photos Reunite Daryl and Carol
"Will Daryl Dixon die in The Walking Dead?" That's the question on everyone's mind as Season 5 gears up for it's debut this October. The other question seems to be, "Is Daryl gay?" According to those close to the show, maybe. Norman Reedus has quite the journey ahead of himself this year, landing as perhaps the most popular character on one of television's most popular series. A new set of photos tease his fate post-Terminus, and it looks promising. Apparently, he'll make it out in tact, and he'll stay alive long enough to reunite with his beloved Carol (Melissa Suzanne McBride). Will they have that important chat about sexuality in the wake of a zombie apocalypse sometime in the near future?

Showrunner Scott M. Gimple and comic creator Robert Kirkman have promised that this will be the most violent and action-packed run of episodes to date. Season 5 will immediately pick-up

'Daryl' Hunts In Another New Image From The Walking Dead Season 5

Given the surroundings, it's a safe bet Daryl is creeping up on one of the (alleged) cannibals in Terminus. Whoever it is on the other side of that plastic, I wouldn't trade places with 'em! Andrew Lincoln (Rick) has told us to expect the most "grown-up" season yet. “We’re really earning our rating this season,” he says. “There are families that watch it together, but just so it’s on the record, guys—it’s a grown-up show this season.” So does this mean they'll finally be able to say "f*ck"! The Walking Dead also stars Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Chandler Riggs, Melissa McBride, Emily Kinney, Danai Gurira, and Chad Coleman, and returns to AMC on October 12th.
