Teen fiction/fantasy - OK but not good
18 June 2011 | by mike-ryan455See all my reviews

I waffled between a four and a five on this one. It was a tough choice, and let me explain my reasoning.

With the sudden abundance of vampires and werewolves on the small screen, any sort of supernatural powers type TV show is not unusual. This one doesn't have the more sophisticated writing of say "True Blood" or their unsophisticated sex scenes. It is obviously intended for teens.

The star, Skyler Samuels, was born in 1994. OK, that's about on for the right age.

What you get is a bunch of unknown actors, many who look like their mid to late 20's playing teen-agers. The worst part is that they are all saying lines that are obviously by 40 year old or older writers. They don't sound like teen-agers any more than the mother in the series does. I know. I have two teen-agers.

Then we get past that, we have the whole plot of the sixteen year old who conveniently gets superpowers. That's so ... ordinary. It's a pale shade of X-men.

I could go over several unbelievable items from the plot but I'd rather not. In a fantasy youth series you expect holes you can drive a semi through. What made me to mark it as a four was their handling of the mother. She was the typical TV single mom, a clueless but attractive doormat who looks barely old enough to have a daughter that age. She was so marginalized by ABC that she isn't even in any of the promo pictures. Search for the name of the mother. It's Amy Pietz. You'll have a hard time finding it - she's considered that unimportant.
