Trivia

Liam Hennessy (Pierce Brosnan) is based on Northern Irish politicians Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness. Adams was actively involved in the Irish Republican movement, although he denies having been a member of the I.R.A. (a claim contested by many). He later became the leader of Sinn Féin, the political branch of the I.R.A., and was heavily involved in establishing a lasting peace accord in Northern Ireland. Hennessy even shows physical resemblance to Adams (short gray hair, full beard, glasses). Adams was never Deputy First Minister for Northern Ireland. That position was filled by Martin McGuinness. In this movie, Hennessey describes a previous nickname, "Butcher of the Bogside" when referring to his terrorist past. Martin McGuinness was known as "Butcher of the Bogside". See more »

Goofs

The exploding laptop at the airport is pure Hollywood special effects and over-dramatization. The destructive force of a bomb depends on the shape of the charge and how the explosive material is packed and tamped. A bomb concealed in a laptop battery, due to its flattened shape, would have caused negligible damage to the plane and mostly just to the passenger in whose lap the computer was sitting. It would be completely impractical to assassinate a planeload of dignitaries. See more »

Quotes

Quan Ngoc Minh: Politicians and terrorists, they are just 2 ends of the same snake.
Quan Ngoc Minh: What's the difference?
Liam Hennessy: There is a difference.
Liam Hennessy: One end bites and the other doesn't.

Much Better Than I Imagined
28 October 2018 | by Derek117See all my reviews

Given that my "Jackie Chan Experience" had been limited to the "Rush Hour" films with Chris Tucker, I was totally (no pun intended) blown away by "The Foreigner." Not only is this is a really good revenge/action movie but Jackie Chan, though still limiting his English dialogue, manages to hold his own with Pierce Brosnan. Jackie Chan's performance made me think back to the silent movies (I went to film school) when actors conveyed emotion through facial expression, not words.

As for the plot--that aI won't spoil for you--it's above average, and blends several social issues about immigration, family loyalty, and Britain/Ireland history. Bottom line: this film was much better than I expected it would be.
