A TV reporter accompanies a group of ATF agents on a raid of suspected gunrunners; on the deck they find the bodies of five civilian men, already dead, two of whom (career criminals) wear authentic uniforms of the US Marine Corps and bear counterfeit ID cards; Director Vance orders the Callen team to investigate. G and Sam find dead birds and squirrels; Eric and Kensi find telephone traces and a street address, which allow the team to meet Esther, a sweet elderly retired researcher in biological warfare, who now suffers from Alzheimer's disease. Esther tells about her recent work, believing that she serves her country; she tells also about her two "Marine" drivers, who take her to and from a lab, where she recently isolated a protein responsible for botulism. The team find someone who provides answers; Sam goes undercover and attends a party and breaks it up; G musters a number of helpers, who catch the bad guys; G and Kensi go shopping; G and Sam take matters in hand. Did You Know?

Callen and Sam in the process of interrogating a suspect they mention to him that they know some Mossad agents. Could they be referring to Ziva David. But if NCIS and NCIS Los Angeles time lines are the same at the time this episode aired Ziva had already denounced Mossad. See more »

Special Agent G. Callen: The FBI's doing the press conference. Announcing the arrest of Troyger and the others.
Special Agent Kensi Blye: And stealing our credit. That was all us. Sam and you and me.
Special Agent G. Callen: Right. But we don't exist.
Special Agent Kensi Blye: That's why you like your job. Because we don't exist.
Special Agent G. Callen: I like my job because I never have to do press conferences.
Special Agent Kensi Blye: Oh. Well, it's true you have a face better for radio.

Birth of Tension
24 November 2010 | by ttapolaSee all my reviews

And NCIS: Los Angeles is back to doing average episodes - watching this is no waste of time, but one could do a lot better. This episode has all the ingredients for a great, tense thriller, yet fails to give birth to any *real* tension. Clichés run rampant an after a while the human brain will likely reduce the memory of this one to a faint recollection.

The best thing about this episode is the adorable Comic Relief Old Lady. I'm not familiar with actress Julianna McCarthy's body of work, but she is the star here. The regular actors fall yet again to their thin roles - but it's the writers who are at fault in not giving these characters the same great personalities than their colleagues in the original NCIS. Sam Hanna may be the hardest hitter of both shows regular characters combined, but the attempts to make Kensi as bad-ass (and great ass) as Ziva have no chance of succeeding. Though the victor would be self-evident, I'm guessing male viewers would like to see a fight between these two tough females. C'mon, someone needs to outdo the Holy Grail of TV cat-fights, the breath-taking one at the climax of season 2 of Alias! And the funniest character in this show so far has been Special Guest Star Abby Sciuto, everyone's favorite goth. Sorry, Los Angeles, you have to do better. You've already shown it in #1.13, now just do it again!
