Aunt Emily and Reverend Dennis have their coffee and dessert at the dining room table as they discuss why Lydia Harrick did not show up for Sandra's wedding shower. Soon, Lydia calls and apologizes, explaining that her brother-in-law, Donald, kept her all evening as they discussed applicants for his new secretary. Later, Donald and Lydia continue to discuss the matter, but Donald ignores Lydia's advice and decides on his preference over hers. Soon after their conversation, Max Canfield calls and invites Lydia for dinner and an open-air concert. Lydia speaks more formally to Max than she might otherwise, knowing that Donald can hear her.
