Interesting Documentary on Jews and the Musical
10 July 2018 | by lchadbou-326-26592See all my reviews

This PBS hour has lots of good clips documenting the history of Jewish influence on the American musical theater, including such highpoints as the introduction of jazz into the Symphony and concert hall with Gershwin,s Rhapsody In Blue (1924) and Benny Goodman,s appearance at Carnegie Hall (1938).It is mentioned early on that even the poorer immigrants strived to have a piano in their new home, such had been the emphasis on music in their culture. The program also details the use of black music by these Jewish artists, such as Goodman,s decision as a bandleader to hire African-American musicians,as early as 1933.Though it is not appropriate for the commentary, when mentioning this topic,to quote the anti-Semitic industrialist Henry Ford.
