(2016– )

Trivia

In the end of the episode, we see an aerial scene of the Griffith Observatory right before the gathering in MacGyver's house. In MacGyver: Pilot (1985), right after the intro we see the Griffith Observatory and a scene after where MacGyver calls it "home".

When Director Thorton is introduced, MacGyver calls her Mrs. Elcar. It's homage to the original director, Dana Elcar, who played Pete Thornton in the original series. Elcar's stand-in on MacGyver (1985) was Don S. Davis, who went on to co-star with original MacGyver, Richard Dean Anderson, on Stargate SG-1 (1997).

In March 2016, George Eads was cast as Lincoln, a government employee with great capability for compassion, who could easily be written off as an eccentric conspiracy theorist. In the original pilot, Joshua Boone, Addison Timlin, and Michelle Krusiec were cast as Gunner, MacGyver's best friend from high school, Mickey, an app developer who is aggressively progressive in her political views, with a soft spot for MacGyver, and Agent Croix, Lincoln's sister who works for the Department of Homeland Security. In June 2016, Eads's character was renamed Jack Dalton.

On the original MacGyver (1985), Nikki Carpenter was introduced as a potential love interest for Mac, though she never really turned into one. She appeared in a few episodes as a recurring agent and his polar opposite, equally capable of getting the job done, while totally infuriating Mac. The character became his good friend and co-worker.

In season 2, all of the episodes, (except the 1st episode) are named after two items that Mac combines in the episode. For example, Mac used a roulette wheel and wire to shrink the titanium vault door. Another is he uses a muscle car and paper clips to restart the heart of the target of the group Riley is infiltrating.

Many character names are borrowed from the original series, though only a few bare any resemblance to their original counterparts.

Patricia Thornton - Peter Thornton (Mac's boss at Phoenix)

Matty Webber - Matt Webber set-up Peter so Matt could take over Phoenix as Pete's successor

Jack Dalton - Mac's childhood friend - great at getting himself (and Mac) INTO, rather than out of, trouble

Wilt Bozer - brothers Milt and Wilt Bozer made a couple of minor appearances

Nikki Carpenter - Mac's polar opposite fellow agent, though never really a love interest (likely introduced to be one, but never became one)

Agent Bannister - old agent-buddy of Mac's, married a communist spy

Penny Parker - played by Terri Hatcher - aspiring actress Mac met in Europe, she became one of Mac's dearest friends

The Colton Family - "Mama", Frank, Jesse, & Billy (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) - the new rendition of the Coltons may be the best character "update" in this show - honors the originals while fully embracing new versions of the characters

Murdoc - What can you say about Murdoc? He is "not your normal professional killer".

James Wan was hired to direct the pilot in February 2016. He pulled out due to scheduling conflicts with The Conjuring 2 (2016), which was in post-production, and David Von Ancken replaced him. After CBS picked up the series in June 2016, the network scrapped the original pilot, with Wan set to direct a new pilot episode.

At the Wales Comic Con in 2019, MacGyver (1985) star Richard Dean Anderson was asked if he had seen MacGyver (2016). He said, "I have, and I'm not real crazy about it, I'll be honest. They approached me early on. They'd done a testing for the show and found it wasn't as attractive as they wanted it to be, so they called and asked if I wanted anything to do with it. And I said no. It's a business, but ... I don't think they've been fair or true to the franchise, e.g. they're shooting up everybody and there's so much going on that you don't see the thought-process that we prided ourselves on. You know, MacGyver sees the problem; he sees solutions to the problem; you see him gathering the solution; and then solving the problem. In this new one, it's boom-boom-boom and it happens so fast."

After spending some time in "renewal limbo", CBS renewed "MacGyver" for a 4th season, but instead of having it's season premiere along with the regular shows, it will be a mid-season replacement premiering sometime in 2020 with Levy Tran being promoted to series regular (filling the spot previously held by George Eads who left during season 3).
