Storyline

In 1967, four unknown actors in a kids TV show became the biggest pop band in the world. In America, they outsold Elvis and The Beatles combined. They were The Monkees. But The Monkees were not a real band, they were a man-made money making machine, driven by ego and ambition. A machine that would ultimately crash and burn. This is the inside story of pop music's first manufactured band. Written by Brian Henry Martin

Slick but some Inaccuracies
6 March 2012 | by pkirk36See all my reviews

The claims that the band had zero input on the first 2 albums is wrong. There are songs Nesmith wrote on both. Don Kirshner's claim that they had no more hits after his involvement ended is also wrong. The show implied that the band broke up after Head came out but they released several more albums after that. Also missing were the various reunions from the 80s onward after the show was rerun on MTV. There are other documentaries I've seen that were more accurate such as the E Hollywood story.

The interview with producer Bob Rafelson was interesting. The editing in of various clips from the Monkees series was well done.
