Some episodes of this season were a bit off. Not the same caliber of season 1 which was really consistently great and had a perfectly well told story with a great style of writing (the scenes of gary in each opening scene with him floating and counting down the time until his oxygen ran out work so effortlessly it's one of the crowing achievements in animation story telling in my opinion)
WELL, it seems the capability to write the best and emotionally engaging story telling is still well within the grasp of this series.
And I have a feeling with how engaged Olan is with his fans, that he'll see the reception of this episode and the other good ones from this season and then compare the ones where viewers felt it fell flat. I have faith he'll rework the next season to fit more with what the fans enjoy. He tried a different style for some of the episodes of the season that was more episodic and had a space bounty hunter vibe with the new ragtag characters and the search for the crystals , and tho it wasnt bad to say the least. It's not what made the first season a hit.
The emotional engagement and comedic timing of this episode was truly great.
My eyes got a little wet. As a middle aged man, perhaps thats a little weird. A really rare thing for me in entertainment to get emotionally invested. But I've grown to really like the main characters.
As always the animation was top notch, feast for the eyes to anyone who appreciates the man hours and talent it takes to create top tier animation.
I'll be re-watching it soon.
