Fairly compelling....
26 April 2012 | by MartinHaferSee all my reviews

I have never visited the San Francisco area, so my enjoyment of this documentary is most likely affected by this. I have no particular attachment for the Golden Gate Bridge--and it holds no charm for me since I grew up on the East Coast. When I think of great bridges, I think of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge or the Sunshine Skyway--amazingly large and impressive bridges in their own right. So, as people wax poetic in talking about the greatness of the Golden Gate Bridge, it didn't impress me very much. What did impress me was learning about how it was built (though the PBS film about the Brooklyn Bridge far surpassed this one in this respect). All in all, rather interesting and worth seeing even if you aren't in love with the bridge.

By the way, although it's very morbid, I am surprised they didn't talk about the large number of suicides that occur on the bridge. With well over 1200 suicides, it's (according to Wikipedia) the place in the world with the highest number of suicides. Sad, but worth mentioning--even if it does make the show anti-climactic.
