When a rescue mission to save trapped cave explorers uncovers the body of a woman wrapped in plastic, Det. Superintendent Dalziel and DI Pascoe have a murder on their hands. The dead woman had been there for quite a long time died from a number blows to the head. She is eventually identified as Lynn Barron who had vanished some years before. There was one suspect at the time of her disappearance, Eddie Summers, but he died in a car accident soon after. Although divorced at the time she disappeared, she had at one time been married to the man who is now the Chief Constable and the senior investigating officer is now the Deputy Chief Constable. The dead woman had reportedly been arguing with her sister and her mother-in-law. The police also learn that a convicted killer, who had also wrapped his victim in plastic, is now out on the street.
