Spoilers

The trivia item below may give away important plot points.

In the pre-title teaser, the Cigarette Smoking Man extends his hand to a weak Mulder and states "I am your father". This is likely a nod to "Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back", when Darth Vader extends his arm to a beaten Luke Skywalker and reveals to him that he is his father. This keeps in line with the character, as the CSM was popularly referred to as 'the Darth Vader of the X-Files' for many years before this episode premiered; a phrase coined by late producer, Kim Manners.
