On the road Jim Hardie spots the team from a stagecoach in harness grazing and further up the road he spots the coach on its side. The driver is dead and a little girl, Carol, is crying at the side of the road about her missing doll, Cindy. A man, Willy Zane, comes out of the coach telling him to put his hands up. After showing his ID, the man tells the facts as he recalls them. He remembers the two men's clothes but didn't see their faces. They took his sample case which had the doll on top of it and $5,000 he won in a game in Rincon. They take Carol to Danton to her Aunt Ruth where she is to live. The doll was given to Carol by her mother right before she died and she asks her Prince Jim to return it to her. Jim and Willy return to Rincon where they look with few clues to go on.
