While Voyager investigates what appears to be a rogue comet, the crew accidentally releases a member of the Q Continuum who has been imprisoned within it for over 300 years to prevent him from committing suicide. He then requests asylum on the ship, which leaves Captain Janeway to decide whether he should go back into confinement or whether to grant his request for asylum, which would give him the opportunity to end his life. Did You Know?

One of Quinn's hiding places from Q involves turning Voyager into a Christmas ornament. The same year that this episode aired (1996), Hallmark released a Voyager Christmas ornament. See more »

Commander Riker is wearing the old-style combadge and the old uniform, which suggests that he has been "abducted" from a time before 2370, i.e. before Voyager was launched and got lost in the Delta Quadrant. Therefore he should have no knowledge of Janeway being captain of that vessel. Janeway took command in 2371. While it has been stated that Tuvok and Janeway had served together before and that prior to infiltrating the Maquis he was Voyagers tactical officer, by the main events of 'Star Trek: Generations, Commander Riker was wearing both the new combadge and the new uniform by 2371. Q: Let's celebrate, just you and me - the two of us.
Captain Kathryn Janeway: What?
Q: I'll take you home. Before you know it, you'll be scampering across the meadow with your little puppies, the grass beneath your bare feet, a man coming over the hill, way in the distance, waves to you. You run to be in his arms, and as you get closer, you see that it's... me!

A rare episode with Q that I like
27 October 2018 | by ghatbkkSee all my reviews

Q was overused in Next Generation so much that I simply got tired of seeing him and the simplistic philosophical ideas that those episodes typically dealt with.

This episode deals also with simple philosophical ideas, but for once, deals intelligently with them, specifically the rights of the individual in comparison with the power of the state.
