While Voyager investigates what appears to be a rogue comet, the crew accidentally releases a member of the Q Continuum who has been imprisoned within it for over 300 years to prevent him from committing suicide. He then requests asylum on the ship, which leaves Captain Janeway to decide whether he should go back into confinement or whether to grant his request for asylum, which would give him the opportunity to end his life.

Commander Riker is wearing the old-style combadge and the old uniform, which suggests that he has been "abducted" from a time before 2370, i.e. before Voyager was launched and got lost in the Delta Quadrant. Therefore he should have no knowledge of Janeway being captain of that vessel. Janeway took command in 2371. While it has been stated that Tuvok and Janeway had served together before and that prior to infiltrating the Maquis he was Voyagers tactical officer, by the main events of 'Star Trek: Generations, Commander Riker was wearing both the new combadge and the new uniform by 2371.
