Storyline

Garak and Bashir are waiting in line in the mess hall, when suddenly, Garak falls ill. An examination reveals an implant in his brain. The device - which was implanted a year earlier - is to prevent the bearer from giving away secrets whilst being interrogated, but, now, Garak's time is quickly running out, and Bashir looks for a way to save his friend's life. In the meantime, Garak tells him contradicting stories about his past. Written by Arnoud Tiele (imdb@tiele.nl)

Trivia

Garak's claim that the station is too cold is consistent with what was established in the pilot episode, Emissary, where the station was too warm (for humans) because the temperature had been set by its (recently-departed) Cardassian inhabitants. His claim that the lights are too bright is consistent with flashbacks to the Terok Nor era (as in Necessary Evil), which show dim blue lighting. See more »

Goofs

Garak complains that the station is constantly too bright. However, when Bashir is looking after a recovering Garak, in his quarters, the lights appear to be on a high setting. See more »

Quotes

Dr. Julian Bashir: [examining a hypospray Garak has been using] Triptacederine? How much of this did you take?
Elim Garak: A mere thirty ccs - not nearly enough, I'm afraid.
Dr. Julian Bashir: Thirty ccs would anesthetize an Algorian mammoth.
Elim Garak: Oh, we Cardassians must be made of sterner stuff. I barely feel it.

Boy it sucks to be Garak....
19 December 2014 | by MartinHaferSee all my reviews

This episode of "Star Trek: Deep Space 9" reveals much about Garak--the enigmatic and tricky Cardassian 'tailor' living on the station. When the show begins, Garak is doing what he often does--he's having a meal with his BFF, Dr. Bashir. Without warning, Garak doubles over--in intense pain and in immediate need of hospitalization. What follows is Garak's story--how he was once a dreaded and powerful leader in the Cardassian Obsidian Order as well as his fall from grace.

While this isn't among the more exciting episodes of the series, it's an important one because it makes Garak A BIT pitiable and a bit easier to understand. Worth seeing.
