Trivia

A little of Johnny Yuma's background is revealed in this episode. The character of John Sims (actor John Dehner) is Johnny's uncle and godfather. Johnny's father became a lawman after the Civil War. Both of Yuma's parents are now deceased but, at one time, his uncle Sims saved the life of Yuma's father. Sims' wife, Emily, is also dead, having been burned alive in a homesteader fire caused by Apache Masi. See more »

John Dehner as John Sims, Johnny's uncle and godfather
25 July 2016 | by kevinolzakSee all my reviews

"The Scalp Hunter," as played by John Dehner, is John Sims, Johnny Yuma's uncle and godfather, for whom the younger man was named, who once saved the life of Ned Yuma by shooting down two men, and repeats the same for Ned's son during at attack by Indians (future director Hal Needham would be back as another Indian in "The Uncourageous"). He demands that Johnny repay his debt by helping him track down the dangerous Apache Masi (Earl Parker, third of five), guilty of killing 11 white folks, since scalp hunter Sims is too farsighted to see beyond the nose on his face. Johnny learns that his aunt Emily was burned to death in her home, and later the sheriff (Dan Sheridan, fourth of five) confirms that she was murdered by Masi, who even kills his own people. Days pass and the trail becomes easier, proof that Masi is expecting company and baiting the trap. John Dehner was a fine actor, and one of the few to repeat his characterization in a future episode, "Jerkwater" (the best known is John Carradine's Elmer Dodson, the editor who inspires Johnny Yuma's dream of being an author).
