James Gregory and Mitzi Hoag
31 March 2014 | by kevinolzakSee all my reviews

"Danny Drops Out" finds Shirley seeking advice from Miss Farrow (Mitzi Hoag, last of 4 episodes), Danny's guidance counselor, on his numerous misadventures in class, similar to that of The Sweathogs. She courageously suggests that, since he wants to actually drop out of school to be a songwriter, they should go ahead and let him do it. 12 minutes at the piano leaves Danny 'bushed,' so he heads on over to the taco stand to see 'the old gang' (Laurie: "have they aged much?"), but finds himself on the outside of all their fun (Gary Dubin's third appearance as Punky Lazaar). When his mother decides he either go to school or get a job, he calls upon millionaire Claude Tubbles (James Gregory), a drop out like himself, but surrounded by educated people who prove invaluable to his company's success. The featured song is "Lookin' for a Good Time," composed by Wes Farrell, Bobby Hart, and Danny Janssen, from eighth LP BULLETIN BOARD. A terrific organ based rocker, it was also issued as the tenth and final single Nov 1973 (backed with B-side "Money Money"), two months prior to its lone appearance on the show, becoming the only single not to chart. The lack of success for both the album and single were hardly a knock on their quality, for it was uniformly excellent; rather it was an indictment on ABC, which switched the show from Friday to Saturday nights opposite ALL IN THE FAMILY- ratings naturally plummeted, fewer viewers meaning fewer listeners to the new music.
