Three young cowhands hired by Ike Smith are more interested in making a name for themselves than working. When Ike fires them, Hoak shoots and kills him. They take Ike's money and leave for Laramie. At the same time Troop is leaving Laramie to check on Ike and his hands. His advice to Johnny is to back away from trouble - if he can. When the young toughs arrive in Laramie and accost Julie, he tells them to move on. At the saloon they become abusive forcing Hank, the bartender, to ask Johnny for help. While seated with a cup of coffee and his hands under the table, he forces the three toughs to leave as they think he has a gun but it is a teaspoon. When they hear everyone laughing at what happened in the restaurant, they shoot at the chef and go after Johnny. He kills Hoak and Troop arrives unnoticed in time to wound Zach. When Johnny tries to apologize for not backing down, Troop replies you can't always do it.
