Al May steals $40,000 from the Fort Laramie paymaster with troopers on his trail when he arrives at the family homestead shared with his dad Carl and half-brother Charlie. Carl lost his pride when Charlie's mom left with his money and a gambler. Since then, Charlie has felt like an outcast due to mother's actions and Al's resentment. Charlie takes the money and Al's horse to deflect the blame from Al. He admits to the theft although no one and especially Lily thinks he did it. She asks Dan to investigate but Troop says his hands are tied. After coming back from Fort Laramie, Dan tells everyone that the paymaster died raising the charge against Charlie to murder. When Charlie pleads guilty to the murder, Carl decides to tell the truth. However, the paymaster is alive and well and Lily is mad - at Dan!
