Commander Stoner's (Jack Albertson) unemployed brother-in-law Arthur Ainsley (befuddled proper English character actor John McGiver) has come aboard the USS Appleby to visit. He's a psychologist who feels the crew is discontented because they appear happy. Professor Ainsley puts the men through a series of tests, delaying their anticipated liberty. Ensign O'Toole (Dean Jones) tells the men to get out of this mess they must think of a way to make Ainsley look bad to Stoner. O'Toole convinces Ainsley that Stoner is showing signs of hating the Navy.
