A football mishap between Jeff (Paul Peterson) and pal Tommy Andre (as William Pearson) brings Hilldale's favorite physician to doctor Stone's home office. But, the lad's mother doesn't want Alex (Carl Betz) treating her son; she prefers grandfatherly James Bell (as Matthew Jason). Donna (Donna Reed) and Alex are surprised when the arriving Mr. Bell informs them that he has announced his retirement, after 41 years of practice. The next day Mary (Shelley Fabares) wants to discuss a dating dilemma, but Donna turns the family's attention to Bell. Donna decides to plan a tribute for the retiring doctor; but, after speaking with Bell and wife Olive Blakeney (who died after this appearance), Donna has second thoughts.
