While 50s Rock & Roller Bobby Rydell is credited as the guest star for this episode, his Mickey Shay character is strictly supportive to the two main characters of the show: Sgt. Saunders and a lone German tank. Rydell's Shay simply provides the means of placing Saunders in a position where he has to singlehandedly battle a German tank, its crew, and two infantry support troops using only his Thompson, some grenades, and a can of diesel fuel. After Saunders first kills the two German infantry troops outside the tank, the real "Duel" then begins between Saunders and the tank. The German crew inside the tank become almost superfluous to the theme of the story as the menacing tank itself becomes the antagonist to Saunder's role as protagonist. As the tank proceeds slowly down the road, Saunders keeps attacking the tank with his Thompson and grenades, and every time the tank turns off the road to go after Saunders, he is able to hide in the trees from the tank crew because of their ... Most of the German dialog is out of sync. It probably had to be re-dubbed because of the noise from the tank. See more »

Understanding Tank Limitations !
17 May 2014 | by jmarcheseSee all my reviews

The Duel is a suspense laden episode of our ever persistent Sergeant Saunders trying to divert an already crippled German tank away from a bend in the road beyond which sets a large American munitions supply truck with flat tire issues. The tank has tread trouble and is taking it easy to avoid the wheels coming off of the tread.

With the truck driver (Bobby Rydell) attempting to change the right front tire in several inches of mud, the duel begins with Saunders precipitating it. Immediately the tank swings to the left to try to pinpoint Saunders' location - but it's not that easy. Sometimes you see him and sometimes not.

It's fun to watch the tank commander's facial expressions as the duel unfolds; he did an excellent piece of acting in this episode. Also, we get an excellent feel for what it's like to be at the tank's controls as a significant amount of footage is filmed inside the tank.

I'm critical of the petrol can scene for obvious reasons.

Bobby Rydell's dialog at the end is hilarious.

Again, excellent screen writing, directing, and stunt work in a Combat episode !
