Storyline

Sportscaster Dave Richards drops by the bar to ask Sam to do an on-camera interview for the evening sportscast that day. The gang at the bar all think it's a great idea except for Diane, who fears Sam will come across as a pathetic figure trying to relive his long, lost glory. Diane's explanation only spurs Sam into doing the interview, to be conducted at the bar. Before going off to get his crew, Dave admits to Carla and Diane that Sam was not his first choice for the interview, nor was he the second, third, fourth, fifth or sixth choice. In going through with the interview, Sam, based on a mid-interview incident, comes to a realization that places a certain punctuation mark at this phase of his professional life. Meanwhile, Harry the Hat hangs out at the bar to practice his trickery and fraud, despite Sam banning him from the premises. Written by Huggo

Goofs

Diane "compliments" Sam's good looks by observing "...but you were standing next to a Cro-Magnon" (Fred Dryer). Cro-Magnons were early homo sapiens, but were more robustly built and obviously culturally primitive than modern humans which was probably Diane's point of reference. See more »

Quotes

[Sam is facing an emotional crisis regarding his former baseball career, and wants to be left alone to brood]
Diane Chambers: Sam, this could be a crucial moment in your life. It is vitally important that you handle your emotions properly. The worst thing that anyone in a situation like this could do right now is to repress his feelings.
Sam Malone: [calmly] Diane, get out. Please?
Diane Chambers: You need to lash out, to release yourself. Scream.
Sam Malone: [screams at the top of his lungs] Get out!
Diane Chambers: Wonderful. All right. Now, we need now to move away...

Sam is Scammed
5 August 2019 | by HitchcocSee all my reviews

Two characters that will appear at times are Fred Dryer and Harry Anderson. The first is an all-looks and little brain sports reporter and the second a magician/con man (who will appear in one of my favorite episodes later). Sam doesn't realize he is being lied to and has to deal with Diane's analyzing him. Here we see the beginning of attraction between the two of them.
