A flashy, sophisticated new girl in town takes a surprising and deep interest in Barney.
When Barney is taken with a new girl in town, he and Thelma Lou have a lover's quarrel and declare their freedom from each other. Barney decides he is going to play the field and begins seeing the new girl. Things move a little too fast for him and, before you know it, he's engaged. He'll need Andy's help to get out of it and back into the good graces of Thelma Lou.
When Barney drives Thelma Lou into town to do some shopping, he notices a car parking in a restricted area. Moving in to give the driver a warning, he is smitten when it turns out to be a beautiful young woman who captures the deputy's imagination as well as his heart. Her name is Melissa Stevens, and soon Barney is spending time with her, taking her places and going over to her house to have dinner with her and her father. This, obviously, does not sit well with Thelma Lou, who confronts Barney about it only to have it turn into a nasty fight that ends their relationship. Despite warnings from Andy that he would do well to simply patch things up with Thelma Lou, Barney won't listen and begins to spend more and more time with Melissa. One night, while on Melissa's couch, words get twisted around and suddenly Melissa thinks he has proposed marriage. When Barney tries to explain, she and her father get angry and threaten a Breach of Promise suit. They bring the case before Andy who offers to settle the matter by simply marrying Melissa and Barney. Everyone is outraged and it is only then that the jig is up, with Andy seeing through the ruse. Melissa (actually Gladys) and her father (actually her husband) are scam artists looking to make a quick buck. Andy lets them go since no real harm was done but suggests strongly that they leave town and not come back. Lesson learned, Barney patches things up with Thelma Lou and all is well.
Barney meets a new arrival in town, the seductive Melissa (causing a spat with Thelma Lou). He's quite taken with her and is soon having dinner with her and her dad. Before Barney realizes what is happening, she announces that they are engaged and even manages to place an item in the local newspaper's gossip column. When he tries to rectify the situation, her father threatens to sue him for breach of promise unless they can settle the matter out of court. Andy soon realizes that they are dealing with con artists and takes steps to rectify the matter.
