One night in Judea, a disabled shepherd boy-turned-beggar and his mother are visited by three strangers. They are the Three Kings, and they are on their way to Bethlehem to visit the Christ Child, who has just been born.

At the 12/24/1951 premier performance of 'Amahl and the Night Visitors', Amahl was played by 12 year old Chet Allen (born 5/6/1939) who also played Amahl in a live Easter telecast 4/13/1952. That summer, Chet Allen's voice changed and he was replaced with 10-year-old Bill McIver who played Amahl in the annual Christmas telecasts from 1952 through 1955 - McIver turned 13 a couple months before the 1955 telecast but still had his soprano range. The last screen in the live telecast was "NBC Opera Theatre", not because it was an episode in the "NBC Television Opera Theatre" series, but rather because it was a commercially supported NBC Opera Theatre production so many of the extras and crew were from the NBC Opera Theatre group. See more
