Disney Family Movies Svod Service Is Shutting Down Ahead of Disney Plus Debut

  • Variety
After 11 years, Disney is pulling the plug on Disney Family Movies On Demand — with the service’s shutdown coming just days before the launch of the Mouse House’s Disney Plus.

Disney Family Movies, which cost between $5-$10 per month, has been available via pay-tv providers in the U.S., including Comcast Xfinity, Charter Communications, Verizon Fios, Cox Communications, Altice USA’s Optimum and AT&T’s U-verse.

As of Oct. 31, 2019, Disney Family Movies will no longer be available, according to a notice on Comcast’s site. Recent movies featured on the subscription VOD service included “The Princess Diaries,” “Enchanted” starring Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey, “National Treasure: Book of Secrets” with Nicolas Cage, and Tim Allen-starrer “The Santa Claus 3: The Escape Clause,” as well as “Pinocchio,” “Honey, I Blew Up the Kid,” “Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch,” “Encino Man” and “Oliver & Company.”

Of Course Nicolas Cage Once Went On A ‘National Treasure’-Style Quest for the Holy Grail

Of Course Nicolas Cage Once Went On A ‘National Treasure’-Style Quest for the Holy Grail
Nicolas Cage is known to many as the treasure hunter Benjamin Franklin Gates from Disney’s “National Treasure” and “National Treasure: Book of Secrets,” but it turns out the Oscar-winning actor dabbles in treasure hunting in his personal life. In an extensive, career-spanning interview with The New York Times, Cage reveals to reporter David Marchese he once went on a real-life “quest” to find the legendary Holy Grail.

“That was the time when I almost went on — you might call it a grail quest,” Cage said. “I started following mythology, and I was finding properties that aligned with that. It was almost like ‘National Treasure.’ Of course, that didn’t sustain.”

Cage continued by saying he became obsessed with figuring out the Holy Grail’s location. Asked by Marchese to clarify his “quest,” Cage explained, “You read a book, and in it there’s a reference to another book, and then you buy that book,

The Meg 2 Is Pulling Ideas from Steven Alten's Other Meg Books?

The Meg 2 Is Pulling Ideas from Steven Alten's Other Meg Books?
The Jason Statham kicks a giant prehistoric shark in the face for two hours motion picture The Meg was one of the more entertaining horror-action movies to hit the screen last year. National Treasure and 3 Ninjas director Jon Turteltaub's big-budget adaptation of author Steve Alten's 1997 blockbuster book Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror was a big enough hit with audiences (and kinda critics) that it seems The Meg 2 is set to swim our way sooner rather than later. But more interesting still is the fact that The Meg 2 may be based on one of Alten's other The Meg books.

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura recently said in an interview.

"I think a little bit and I'm going to reserve comment because until I read it, I don't want to send people off in the wrong direction."

Fair enough, Di Bonaventura. But just saying The Meg 2 might

National Treasure 3 Is Not Greenlit Yet, Will We Ever See It?

National Treasure 3 Is Not Greenlit Yet, Will We Ever See It?
We may yet still see Nicolas Cage hunting for various riches one more time as National Treasure 3 is still on the table. At the very least, producer Jerry Bruckheimer still wants to make a third installment of the franchise and talks have happened at Disney over the last few years. This news comes directly from Disney CEO Bob Iger, who has offered some hope for those who wish to see another over-the-top treasure hunt.

This news came as part of the Disney annual shareholder meeting, which was held recently in St. Louis, Missouri. At one point, Bob Iger was taking questions from some of those in attendance and National Treasure 3 came up. While he couldn't say much, mostly because it sounds like there isn't much to say about it at present, he revealed that discussions have been taking place since 2016 or so, though no green light has been given.

Director Jon Turteltaub reveals why National Treasure 3 still hasn’t happened

Jon Turteltaub, director of the first two National Treasure movies, has revealed why the third film has yet to happen.

The Nicholas Cage vehicles National Treasure (2004) and National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007) both proved successful ventures for director Jon Turteltaub and their studio Disney. Yet, we are still yet to see a third film in the adventure series.

Disney revealed back in 2016 that a third film might happen but why has there been no news so far? Well, according to Turteltaub (speaking to Collider), it’s because Disney has more franchises than it knows what to do with:

“When National Treasure first got made, there was a lot more money to go around. Everybody got paid nicely. The problem with getting the third one made isn’t the people who are getting paid saying, ‘I’m not doing it unless you pay me a lot!’ It’s really that Disney

Disney Doesn’t Want to Make ‘National Treasure 3,’ But a Reboot for Disney’s Streaming Service is Likely

Disney Doesn’t Want to Make ‘National Treasure 3,’ But a Reboot for Disney’s Streaming Service is Likely
Every time I talk to director Jon Turteltaub, I have to ask about the status of National Treasure 3. The Nicolas Cage-led 2004 film is a delightful Da Vinci Code meets Indiana Jones-lite adventure and it spawned a not-as-much-fun sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, in 2007. Fans have been asking for a third installment in the […]

Imagine a really big shark. No, bigger than that. Really big. I can guarantee that whatever you’re picturing would still be but a snack for the gargantuan menace of The Meg. For months now, there’s been a steady stream of buzz building around the pic, with horror fans everywhere eagerly anticipating another shark film after the fairly enjoyable 47 Meters Down. Granted, The Meg will be quite a bit different, but still there’s much to look forward to here and now, as the film approaches its summer release, the marketing machine is getting ready to kick into high gear.

After a record-breaking February saw calendar grosses top $1 billion for the first time ever, March is hoping to maintain that momentum. Although, last weekend's new releases didn't exactly blow the doors off, but Disney and Marvel's Black Panther kept things moving along and with the film entering its fourth weekend in release it faces its first true test for the #1 spot at the weekend box office. Interestingly enough, it's another Disney title serving as the challenger as A Wrinkle in Time looks to top the weekend's list of newcomers, which also include The Hurricane Heist, Gringo and The Strangers: Prey at Night. At the top of the box office it's a two horse race. On the one hand, Disney and Marvel's Black Panther is looking to become the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to top the weekend box office in its first four weekends. On the other hand,

Jason Statham’s Killer Shark Movie The Meg Introduces Its Bait

Imagine a really big shark. No, bigger than that. Really big. I can guarantee that whatever you’re picturing would still be but a snack for the gargantuan menace of The Meg. This upcoming shark caper is the next project from The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and National Treasure: Book of Secrets director John Turteltaub, who sounds like he’s way overdue changing his name to John Sharkeltaub.

Based on Steve Alten’s 1997 book Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror, the movie follows the crew of a deep sea submersible as they’re menaced by a giant, hungry monster. Said monster turns out to be a prehistoric Megalodon (hence ‘The Meg’), and its colossal razor-sharp jaws leave the sub trapped on the ocean floor. Only one man can face down ‘The Meg’ and save the crew, and he comes in the form of Jason Statham.

He’s got a past beef with this shark,

Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge (aka Dead Men Tell No Tales) movie review: yo ho no

MaryAnn’s quick take… The franchise finally overstays its welcome with this cacophony of CGI spectacle, a contrived and confusing plot, and a newly cruel and stupid Jack Sparrow. I’m “biast” (pro): loved the original trilogy…

I’m “biast” (con): …but started to lose a little patience with the fourth film

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Okay, make it stop. This amusement-park ride has gone on long enough. It is no longer any fun. I’m feeling a bit nauseated, in fact.

I adored the original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy: they were smart, fun popcorn flicks that worked as clever updates on the classic Hollywood swashbuckler, all adventure and movie-movie romance and total, wonderful nonsense. With the third installment, 2007’s At World’s End, the series even managed to whip up some satirical zing, in its plot about gig-economy independent-contractor pirates versus

How Diane Kruger Went From Ballet Dancer to Actress And Found Herself Along the Way

How Diane Kruger Went From Ballet Dancer to Actress And Found Herself Along the Way
“How are you not a big damn star?” This was the question I most itching to ask German actress Diane Kruger when we sat down to discuss her curious career and her latest lauded film, Alice Winocour’s surreal thriller “Disorder.”

A striking beauty with regal cheekbones, the tri-lingual Kruger has been awing audiences for years, thanks to turns in French prestige pictures like Benoît Jacquot’s “Farewell, My Queen” and bold American movies like Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds.” Yet somehow, Kruger’s path has not led her to A-list status. Retracing her steps from ballerina to model to internationally acclaimed thespian, we explored the whys and why bother of it all.

Kruger’s earliest artistic ambition was ballet, which she studied at the Royal Academy in London. “I didn’t know it then,” she told IndieWire,
