Ralph Kennington, dying of thirst in the alkali dust of the desert, staggered forward until exhaustion stares him in his face. Ralph Kennington, recovered, had gone to live with his new-found pal, Jim Raleigh. The two became fast friends and were the first to hurry back to the gold field. Among those who joined that first mad rush to the gold fields was old man Hadley and his daughter Marguerite. Years of unsuccessful mining had greatly impoverished his fortune and health, so when at last he found his claim rich beyond his dreams, the poor old miner's heart gave away, leaving pretty Marguerite without a protector. Ralph and James took her in and for some months everything moved smoothly. Both men fell deeply in love with their young housekeeper.
