Movies New to Netflix in October: ‘The Shining,’ Two ‘Monty Python’ Features, a Pair of Unnerving Originals, and More

  • Indiewire
Just in time for the Halloween movie-going season, Netflix is bringing out the big guns, offering up Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” as one of its marquee titles new to the service next month. Consider it a peace offering of sorts, as the rest of the month isn’t exactly bursting with other horror picks, beyond Mickey Liddell’s “The Haunting of Molly Hartley,” Jeff Wadlow’s “Truth or Dare,” and the decidedly creepy Dirty Harry feature “The Dead Pool.”

Want something lighter? There are a number of comedies arriving on Netflix in October, including “Billy Madison,” “Blazing Saddles,” plus a pair of Monty Python features — “The Meaning of Life” and “Life of Brian,” which will arrive together on October 2. The streaming giant is also offering up some modern rom-coms to take the edge off a month of thrills and chills, including “Must Love Dogs,” “Zack and Miri Make a Porno,

A Double Dose of Noah Baumbach Comes to Netflix Next Month, Plus ‘Before Midnight,’ ‘Donnie Darko,’ and More
While October usually signals the arrival of all sorts of spooky, creepy, scary, and otherwise appropriately Halloween-themed films to both theaters and streaming services, this month’s batch of new titles on Netflix offers up a delightfully wide variety of choices that aren’t all tied to the year’s primary celebration of fear. Sure, those titles are there — from more mainstream chillers like “Cult of Chucky” and the new original “The Babysitter,” to more offbeat picks like the cannibal coming-of-age tale “Raw” and the seminal “Donnie Darko” — but this month’s incoming list has more than enough for movie fans who don’t want to shriek at their televisions.

Life is good for Kaley Cuoco these days: She’s been traveling the world this summer, the Big Bang Theory premiere is around the corner, and she and her boyfriend Karl Cook are happy as ever.

People caught up with the actress on Wednesday in Studio City, California, where she was hosting an event with Panera Bread to promote the launch of the company’s new beverage campaign. Of course, we had to ask about her beau Cook, whom she’s been dating for almost a year and a half.

“He’s great,” she gushed, noting that the two share

‘Megan Leavey’ Review: Kate Mara Heroically Saves An Uneven Military Biopic That Can’t Stop Chasing Its Tail

‘Megan Leavey’ Review: Kate Mara Heroically Saves An Uneven Military Biopic That Can’t Stop Chasing Its Tail
A true story so pure that it almost grants its teller the permission to be sloppy, Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s “Megan Leavey” is a bit of a mess from the moment it starts, but it’s hard to completely dismiss any movie with a soul this strong, just as it would be hard to dismiss a disobedient puppy so long as its tail keeps wagging. An unlikely mutt that crossbreeds the cuteness of “Must Love Dogs” with the suspense of “The Hurt Locker,” “Megan Leavey” is the kind of movie that writes itself, and often feels as though it has.

Based on the very real, very believable bond between a young marine corporal and the volatile German Shepherd with whom she partners during her tours of duty in Iraq, this broadly engaging drama is gripping when it deals with the details of being a woman on the front lines, and it

John Cusack: examining his recent straight-to-dvd movies

facebook

twitter

google+

John Cusack has made 17 films in four years. We've found the ones that have gone all-but straight to DVD and watched them...

John Cusack is a bit of a Hollywood oddity. There’s no pattern to the type of movie he will choose to do, so he’s always kept us on our toes. Sure, he’ll make a dumb action movie, but that will often afford him the chance to make a few smaller gambles later on. Up until the last few years he’s played the system very well, but recently his ethic appears to have, um, waned? A little?

Since the heady days of Say Anything and Sixteen Candles he’s come to represent a sort of slightly weird-looking, awkwardly charming, offbeat everyman that men aged 18-49 can look at and go 'me'” - which is fine. There’s a place for that, as

Tom Hardy Loves Dogs, Bonded With The Drop Puppies—See Photos of the Actor With His Furry Friends!
What's the key to Tom Hardy's heart? Must love dogs. The 36-year-old British actor, who played the villain Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, and longtime partner Charlotte Riley have two dogs of their own. He also helps others find homes and bonds with dogs he works with. "Can't have any more for the moment," he said about his family pets in an interview with Vulture, which was posted on Wednesday. "And actually, they're a handful, two. But I love dogs. Like, A Lot. They're my favorite animal. Ever." Hardy's latest film, The Drop, the late James Gandolfini's final movie, features a pit bull named Rocco. Hardy was spotted last year cuddling with...

It's Complicated recap: wait until your dream girl is vulnerable, then move in

It may have all the hallmarks of female-friendly fluff, but Nancy Meyers' 2009 rom-com which will be shown on Channel 4 at 9pm on Saturday rises above other films of its ilk

If Netflix had a "Female-friendly films with annoyingly chatty titles featuring era-specific phrases" category, that's where you'd find It's Complicated. It's also where you'd find Something's Gotta Give, You've Got Mail, I Don't Know How She Does It and Must Love Dogs all immediately recognisable, thanks largely to their gratuitous use of the Didot font on all their posters.

Oscars In Memoriam 2014: Cory Monteith, Dennis Farina, Sarah Jones and more misses

  • Pop2it
Forgetting stars in the Academy Awards "In Memoriam" segment is almost as much a tradition as the fashion and speeches. But which stars missed out on live Oscars broadcast in 2014? Cory Monteith, Dennis Farina, Sarah Jones and Tom Clancy are among those not memorialized on TV.

Thanks to the Internet, the 86th Academy Awards can claim to honor just about everyone in film who died. Still, there's a bit of a slight felt by fans of those deemed unworthy for the telecast. Here are some of the biggest names left out of the video:

Jonathan Winters -- Died: April 11, 2013. Claim to Oscar fame: "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World," "The Russians Are Coming the Russians Are Coming," "The Smurfs"Gary David Goldberg -- Died: June 22, 2013. Claim to Oscar fame: "Must Love Dogs," sitcoms from "Family Ties" to "Spin City"Cory Monteith -- Died: July 13, 2013. Claim to Oscar fame: "Glee,

The Bag Man Review

I have only myself to blame. After checking out the trailer for The Bag Man (previously Motel) and noting the presence of John Cusack and Robert De Niro, two actors who have done terrific work in the past (I mean, De Niro has two Oscars on his mantelpiece, for chrissake), I started to get a little excited for this indie crime thriller. Perhaps it would maintain a cool, neo-noir vibe, or at least give Cusack and De Niro a chance to craft nasty, interesting characters. Alas, that quantum of expectation simply made it all the more agonizing for me to sit through one of the laziest, dopiest thrillers I’ve seen in years.

The film starts off with a boring set-up, as criminal Jack (Cusack) gets an assignment from his big-shot boss Dragna (De Niro): pick up a bag and hold it at a seedy motel until Dragna arrives.
