Storyline

Michael Wong returns in this sequel to FIRST OPTION, reprising his role as Stone, the tough-as-nails leader of Hong Kong's elite Flying Tigers. THE NEW OPTION finds Stone looking hard for suitable new recruits, who seem to be few and far between. Forced to lower his standards for admission, Wong's training skills are put to the test by his new class of recruits. However, when a highly trained military-like outfit begins a string of big robberies, it gives some of the newest Flying Tigers a chance to prove their mettle. Written by IvanWong

Unfocused and Average
24 September 2003 | by NIXFLIX-DOT-COMSee all my reviews

THE NEW OPTION is the latest entry into the SDU (the Hong Kong SWAT unit) series. Michael Wong, long associated with the series, returns as a SDU commander. The movie itself is unfocused and average, and there is actually only one lengthy gunfight at the very end of the movie. The movie's narrative is muddled and one gets the feeling that there was no actual script. It wouldn't be too far fetched to believe that most of the storyline was made up as production went along.

It's no surprise that information on the movie is scant. There is no director or writer listed, only the name "Wong Jing". Gordon Chan is supposedly the director, but anyone who has seen his earlier works won't be able to find it here.

THE NEW OPTION is average at best. Good luck trying to understand what's happening, or even who the villains are, and why they do the things they do.
